The St. James Sharpes and the Manchester Spurs played out the first draw of the 2016-2017 Berger Elite League netball competition on Thursday night. In a keen tussle at the Leila Robinson Courts at the Independence Park, the teams played out a 36 all tie in a game riddled with unforced errors and poor shooting.

The Clarendon Gaters led by the young twin towers of Kadie-Ann Dehaney (19/21) and Simone Gordon (20/23) edged the St. James Sharpes 40-38 in an exciting game one, of the best of three finals in the Berger Elite League competition at the Leila Robinson Courts on Friday.

As the curtain comes down on yet another exciting season of the Berger Elite League (BEL) the third place play-off and game one of the finals will be contested on Friday June 5th at the Leila Robinson Courts at Independence Park.

The 2015 Berger Elite League netball competition tipped off on Friday March 20 at the Leila Robinson Court. This year's competition will host some of Jamaica’s finest netball players, assembled in 6 teams vying for the championship prize of J$300,000. In addition to the team prizes, Berger Paints has announced a new award for the player named the MVP for the tournament.

The teams competing in the tournament are defending champions Kingston Hummingbirds, St Ann Orchids, Manchester Spurs, St James Sharpes, Clarendon Gaters and St Catherine Racers.

Defending champion Kingston Humming Birds will open the Berger Elite League against runner-up St. Catherine Racers at 7:30 pm sharp today.

New head coach of the defending champion, Marvette Anderson said that her team will be gunning for the win in year two. She also said that the team had had their training session and was now ready for St. Catherine Racers who they defeated in a best of three to win the league last year.

The opening ceremony will get underway at 6:30 pm.

Third place St. James Sharpes will face off with last paced St. Ann Orchids at 4:30 pm.

Netball Jamaica (NJ) conducted its lottery to select the six Berger Elite League teams for the second year of the competition. The lottery took place Wednesday night at the Netball House in Kingston.

The league is set to start next Friday March 13 at the Leila Robinson courts with all six teams playing in round one. The teams are defending champion Kingston Humming Birds, 1st runner up St. Catherine Racers, St. James Shapres, Manchester Spurs, Clarendon Gaters and St. Ann Orchids.
