Portmore United will be looking to pile the pressure on bottom of the table Humble Lion in the early kickoff of the Jamaica Premier League today.

Except for the blip when they were surprised 1-0 by Vere United in their second game of the season, the champions have been going from strength to strength.

Three victories from their four games propelled them to the top of the table on nine points in match week four. Their 3-1 win over Tivoli Gardens on Monday was their best performance to date and rivals any other team in the competition so far.

The swagger has returned to the two-time defending champions who seem to be rounding into form. The addition of Demar Rose to the midfield has freed up captain Ricardo Morris who was able to get higher up the pitch and influence the attack much more.

Both players scored spectacular goals in their team’s win and along with the exquisite lob by the St Lucian Jevick McFarlane is perhaps the best trio of goals scored by one team, since the start of the season.

Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner has urged his players not to “get bore of the good habits” and will be asking for a similar type of performance from his team as they look to return to the top of the table.

Shande James also had a big performance on Monday as he proved a threat down the right flank time and time again. Demario Phillips, though not scoring was also a menace in attack, proving a handful down the left channel.

The Humble Lion defence, which is the leakiest in the league so far, having conceded all of eight goals will be under pressure to contain one of the best offences in the competition.

Andrew Price had chopped and changed in an effort to find a team that can finally put points on the board this season, so it remains to be seen which eleven will take to the field today.

They will miss captain Linval Lewis who was given a straight red card in their match against Vere and it is likely that Andrew Vanzie will wear the armband again, after taking it over in the derby loss, following Lewis’s ejection.

Humble Lion prop up the league without a point and have scored just two goals so far this season. Their disjointed performances have been dismal to date and one wonders what it will take for a turnaround to take place at the club.

The lack of commitment from the players is shocking and Price must be cursing his luck that there is no transfer window this season. Too many senior players reported significantly overweight at the start of the season and the club is paying a “heavy” price for it.

At this point in time the most that can be hoped for are some respectable performances befitting the status of the club.
