In what was the first of a doubleheader on Sunday, at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence, a tactical masterclass from Donovan Duckie and his men saw Vere United thrash Humble Lion three goals to one.

It was a very tough and eventful Clarendon derby between Vere United and Humble Lion FC that exploded from the first whistle of the game. Since their very first meeting, Vere United had never defeated Humble Lion, until Sunday’s clash.

Two goals and a man-of-the-match performance from, Ricardo Messam who terrorized Humble Lion’s defensive setup was the main reason for the Vere victory as they just could not find a suitable answer to neutralize the attacker.

As the game went on, it was an untidy defensive display from veteran defender Kemar Drake that led to Vere United’s go-ahead goal and Messam’s first of the contest in the 27th minute.

Through a delightful and sublime lofted searching pass from Alton Lewis, Kemar Drake missed controlled the ball inside the penalty area. After Drake failed to clear the danger, Messam slotted home a first-time attempt that went past Mikhail Harrison in goal.

Both teams were trading punches throughout the game, but it was Linval Lewis who first received a straight red card in the 30th minute after referee Andre Farquharson was advised by his assistant that the challenge warranted a dismissal.

After going down to ten men, Andrew Vanzie struck home a low-powered shot from the penalty spot to level the contest, following a handball in the box.

While Vere United had given up their early lead, a brilliant surge from Romone Plummer and Tyrese Harrison gave the mesmerizing Messam his second from a point-blank ricochet effort as Vere took the lead once again.

Andre Gayle was the man that ended the contest in the dying moments of the game from a low-powered, long-range shot in stoppage time that secured all three points and bragging rights, in what was a drama-filled Clarendon derby.

Meanwhile, Donovan Duckie received a yellow card for having words with the referee, but he did not mind because he was leaving with the win.

“Well full credit to my team. It’s a derby game and we know exactly what would have happened. I thought the referee had his hands full, but did the best he could,” said Duckie.

“We scored some goals today, which is unlike us, because we started to play from a defensive position, but I thought the guys stuck to the task and it was hard work that gave us the victory,” Duckie explained.

After playing four games, Humble Lion is yet to register a point and Andrew Pryce was infuriated and very disappointed with the results.

“We keep shooting ourselves in the foot every week and getting that red card so very early in the first half, we were always behind the eight ball and had to battle against a team with a numerical advantage,” Price lamented.

“We have to find ways of managing and playing the game properly. We have to play with some common sense and we not doing that right now which is unfortunate and giving up goals that the opponents don’t have to work hard for,” Price closed.
