Sixth placed Mount Pleasant FA will take on eighth place Arnett Gardens in the feature game of the Jamaica Premier League at the Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence at UWI today.
Neither team are where they wanted to be at this stage of the season, especially Mount Pleasant, who have made significant investments in putting their squad together over the past few years.
Following the 0-2 loss to Harbour View match week three, the club made the decision to part ways with head coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, making him the third coaching casualty of the season.
Technical Director Wally Downs has taken over as head coach, but could only watch in frustration as his team gave up a 2-1 advantage late on, to end up with a 2-2 draw against a plucky Molynes United last Sunday.
Mount Pleasant had done well to recover after falling behind to an early goal, rallying with two quick goals shortly after half time, but were caught cold three minutes from time and thus denied their second win of the campaign.
Five points out of a possible twelve falls way below the expectations of the ambitious club and so a proper response against a youthful Arnett Gardens team will be expected.
For their part, it has been an inauspicious start to the season for the “Junglists”. Having ‘rested’ during match week one, they have been left playing catch up with the rest of the league. One win and two losses from three game, has left the Alex Thomas coached team floundering in the bottom half of the table in eighth position.
Their inexperience, especially in defence, showed when they were hammered 3-0 by Cavalier last Saturday. They have been particularly wasteful in front of goal in their three outings to date. Hardley Barnes, Steve Clarke and Renaldo Cephas have been guilty of glaring misses.
The fact that they have been creating chances will give Thomas some hope, but as long as they keep missing at the rate they currently are, that hope will soon turn into frustration.
Despite being off the pace, a win on Saturday would drag Arnett Gardens right back into contention and so Thomas will be hoping for a little bit of luck against an inconsistent Mount Pleasant team.
The odds favour Mount Pleasant going into this encounter, but fortune favours the brave, so it is left to be seen if the youngsters of Arnett Gardens can rise to the challenge.
