Former Trinidad and Tobago’s football playerAlphanso Cunningham, IPC Athletics World Championships, David Nahkid confirmed the long held speculation of his FIFA presidential bid during a press conference in Beirut on Wednesday.

He now enters a race to succeed the current FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who heads the organization under a current tumultuous period.

Several major players including the existing president, are under the microscope following wide spread corruption scandals, that have rocked football at the top level in 2015.

The former Trinidad and Tobago team captain Nahkid was quoted as saying, “I submitted formally my candidacy paperwork last week in Zurich. I have the support of five members states of the international federation, but it is better that they remain anonymous for now,” he told AFP reporters.

The 51 year old Nakhid, will join two other official presidential candidates Michel Platini and Ali bin al Hussein of Jordan to assume reigns at the world largest sporting association.

Platini has been provisionally suspended for a 90 day period but submitted his candidacy ahead of the October 26 deadline, but he could be declared ineligible due to current ethical breaches.

Now with the three man race in place, the governing body FIFA said after a meeting earlier this week said it will go ahead with the election on February 26 2016 despite all that is happening around the sport.

Blatter had already announced plans to resign before being banned for 90 days by FIFA ethics committee for an investigation over a 2011 payment to UEFA President Platini.
