First timers, the Dragons from the Towers Residence clipped a less than inspired Dynamites of Chancellor Hall 2-1 at the UWI Bowl on Sunday, to book a spot in the finals of the Sagicor/UWI Guild Champions League in their first season.

The game took a while to come to life and the first opportunity fell to Dynamite forward Shampir Harris inside the box but the player chose to pass when shooting was a better option, giving Kedar Clarke a chance to recover and clear the danger for the Dragons.

The Dragons showed that they were up for the challenge when they had a good build-up down the right which ended with a shot from Lamar Eunick which went just wide of the target from 16 yards.

Ten minutes before half time the Dragons took the lead when their captain, Justin Gordon Martin, scored directly from a free kick. The defender’s fierce shot went all along the ground and into the corner of the net, avoiding the despairing dive of Kahleel Robinson in the Dynamite goal.

The experienced Dynamites seemed out of their depth and were unable to cope with the power and pace of Dwayne “Dog Flea” Smith up front as the tall striker had the defenders on the back foot all day.

The Dragons who led 1-0 at half time, iced the game with less than thirty seconds played in the second half when Smith found the back of the net with what appeared a harmless shot on goal. The Dynamite custodian, Robinson, failed to get his body behind the ball and it took an awkward bounce in front of the keeper before skipping past him and into the net.

The Dragons then took full control of the game, managing possession and managing the clock to good effect.

There were given a scare when Harris pulled one back for the Dynamites in time added on, but it would prove too little too late for the Chancellorites who will watch the finals from the sidelines yet again.

The Dragons will face Siberia of Irvine Hall in the final on Friday starting at 6:00pm. Siberia dethroned three times champions Attica, when they beat them 4-1 in the feature game on Sunday.
