The 2013 Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund have put talks on hold for the forseeable future with their star man Marco Reus. The 25 year old attacker has reportedly been refusing to agree a new deal with the Gelsenkirchen club as he is seeking a new challenge. In light of their poor form in the Bundesliga, the club has made it clear that they are focusing on the performance on the pitch before continuing discussions with Reus.

Jurgen Klopp’s men currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga table with just seven points from their nine games so far. Sporting director Michael Zorc revealed that despite it being important to try and tie down the Dortmund-bred Reus, it is the performance on the pitch that is of first priority.

He said, ‘Nothing has changed about our intentions to continue our collaboration with Marco. But the current situation demands full focus from everybody at the club. Our biggest priority at the moment is to get out of this difficult situation. Everything else comes after that for now.’

The speedy winger has a contract with the BVB that runs until 2017 but it has a release clause of €25M that was disclosed by Bayern Munich’s president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Dortmund is hoping to extend his deal, making him the club’s top earner and remove the buy-out clause from his contract. The 25 year old has recently returned for an ankle injury and has hit the back of the net three times in seven games at the Signal Iduna Park.

Should he decide not to extend his contract with Dortmund, Reus will not be short of options. He has been linked with a move to Liverpool recently but in the past he has been linked to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Arsenal, both Manchester clubs and of course the BVB’s bitter rivals Bayern Munich.
