After a miserable 6 months at the San Siro following his move from CSKA Moscow in January, Keisuke Honda was criticized for his woeful form as he struggled to adapt. After an early exit from the World Cup and some much needed rest, the Japanese returned to AC Milan with a point to prove. He returned a bit late for preseason but the 28 year old had a reasonable amount of time to get fully fit for the upcoming season.

The powerfully built left-footer known for his ferocious shot as well as his vision and ability to pick a pass, has been a revelation for Milan so far this season. Although he is most effective in a central playmaking role, Honda has been in fine form playing on the right of Filippo Inzaghi’s preferred 4-3-3 system. He has managed to hit the back of the net on 6 occasions from 9 games so far while providing 3 assists.

Honda comes with a big reputation from Russia where he was used mostly on the right but he would cut inside on his preferred left foot. He does his best work in and around the penalty area because he has the ability to link-up the play and break down tight defences. He is very comfortable on the ball due to his technical ability and is quite quick over the first 5-10 yards to get away from defenders.

The Rossoneri lacks genuine quality in the attacking third but must utilize the Japanese as best as possible in order to pose a threat to the opposition’s defense. With a striker like Fernando Torres leading the line, Honda’s vision would be great for the Spaniard whose movement is exceptional at times. Honda has a decent scoring record as well so with Torres’ willingness to run-in behind stretching the defense, he could provide space for Honda to drift into in the final third where he is most effective as the central playmaker.

With no European distractions this season, Milan can focus solely on the Serie A and try to secure a spot in Europe for next season. They are currently sitting in third on 16 points which is 6 behind champions Juventus and AS Roma. Inzaghi will be hoping his boys can remain competitive over the course of the season and if Honda’s form can last for the duration of the season then Milan could seal a place in next season’s Champions League.
