Defending champions Barbican FC took sole leadership of Zone A in the Sherwin Williams Women’s Football League when they edged the previously unbeaten Waterhouse FC 1-0 at the Duhaney Park Playfield on Thursday.

The game failed to live up to expectations with only one of the three expected “nationals” Trudian Mills lacing up for the game. Mills had a huge impact on the game, especially in the first half where she delivered a number of telling crosses that had the Waterhouse defence in no ends of trouble.

The champions got off to the quicker start of the two and had a chance to take the lead from the third minute when Latoya Duhaney was played in behind the Waterhouse defence. She fired a shot to the far post but was denied by a finger tip save by Shantel Graham.

Duhaney missed an easier chance ten minutes later, but even before Waterhouse could thank their lucky stars, they found themselves a goal down. Mills was slipped in by her captain Alicia James and she beat her marker before crossing the ball which hit the crossbar and fell onto the head of the unlucky Imanie Richards and rebounded into the goal.

Barbican continued to dominate the half and Graham failed to convert from close range when picked out by another accurate cross from Mills who was having her own way down the right.

Davia Smith also came close when she headed against the upright from a corner kick as the champions sought a second goal.

The second half saw a much improved performance from Waterhouse with Chevannese Clarke and Watkins putting some pressure on the Barbican defenders as a result of the enterprise of Shanice Steele in midfield. Shanel Spence, from the Under-15 national team, also had an improved showing in the half as she proved a constant threat down the left flank.

Despite their improved performance the former champions never really threatened the current champions’ goal and the best chances of the half fell to Davis who missed a header from close range and luckless Duhaney failed to beat Graham in a one on one situation.

On the balance of play, the result was probably a fair one although Waterhouse will feel they let a good chance slip against a below par Barbican team.

Other Zone A games saw Olympic Gardens held at home by Trelawny Women’s FC and Arnett Gardens roared back into the mix when they whipped Portmore Strikers 3-0 at the Racing Oval after being on the end of a similar result on the previous match day.
