Waterhouse FC of Jamaica, put in a powerful display against Tauro FC of Panama in the CONCACAF Champions League, defeating them 4-1 inside the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica on Thursday night. In front of small crowd at the stadium, Jamaica’s only representative in the competition gave a display of fast counterattacking football that to which the visitors had no answers.

With Jermaine “Tuffy” Anderson leading the line, ably assisted by Juvaunne Benjamin in attack the fast moving Waterhouse team were all over their opponents from the opening whistle. Barely four minutes were on the clock when Anderson got his first chance of the match when he cut inside a defender and fired on target only to see Eric Hughes tip it behind for a corner.

Tauro was finding it difficult to get out of their half and were counting their lucky stars in the 10th minute after Benjamin failed to beat Hughes when one on one with the keeper. His efforts to chip the custodian were thwarted and the score remained 0-0.

The luck of the Jorge Valdes coached team ran out in the 13th minute when another deadly Waterhouse move finally bore fruit. Midfield maestro Vincent Earle picked out his skipper Damarley Samuels with a sublime pass down the right side. Samuels did well to control the ball before delivering the perfect pass for Anderson who ghosted past the defence and slotted home to break the deadlock.

Waterhouse continued applying the pressure and were having a lot of joy down the right flank as Samuels found himself with lots of space with which to work. Ironically, the second goal for the Anthony Patrick coached team came from the left side but from the deserving Samuels. The former Clarendon College player who switched to the left side persisted with a ball and after getting advantage of his opponent rifled the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-0 in the 24th minute. He was later yellow carded for his exuberant goal celebration.

Shortly before half time Benjamin missed another chance to get his name on the score sheet when his striker partner delivered the perfect ball after receiving another diagonal pass from Earle. Benjamin’s header went over the crossbar and the Waterhouse team went in 2-0 at the break.

Tauro missed a glorious chance to get back in the game just three minutes after the interval when Luis Moreno was left unmarked at the back post on a corner kick. The defender was left cursing his luck when he headed just wide of the upright.

The home team stepped up the tempo and the mercurial midfielder Romario “Rom Rom” Campbell went on a mazy run on the edge of the area before unleashing a grounder which Hughes did well to gather in the 50th minute.

Five minutes later Anderson completed his brace when a delightful pass from the boot of Campbell picked him out on the right flank. The big centre forward cut inside a defender yet again, before unleashing a thunderbolt passed Hughes to make it 3-0 to delight of the Waterhouse faithful in the stands.

With the match all but won, Waterhouse took their foot off the pedal and the visitors took advantage when Jose Luis Garces headed home from a corner kick cutting the deficit to 3-1 in the 64th minute. Tauro continued to enjoy a period of dominance after the goal before the home team took back control of the contest.

Earle who was having a good game in midfield found himself at the end of a cross from Anderson who was given too much room all night. The midfielder was unable to control his header and it sailed over the bar. Waterhouse goalkeeper, Richard “Spoon” McCallum who had very little to do all night was alert in the 86th minute when blocked with his feet to save a sure goal after a defensive blunder.

The icing was put on the cake when substitute Neiko Williams ran unto a spill by Hughes. He kicked the ball unto the upright but was alert enough to finish off his own rebound in the second minute of stoppage time. Waterhouse was recording their second win over Tauro in the competition.
