Major League Soccer (MLS) is set to welcome two of the biggest names in world football. Frank Lampard and David Villa are set to join New York FC which is owned by the owners of Manchester City. Villa and Lampard were reported to be at City’s training complex with the Spaniard undergoing a medical and Lampard agreeing a deal to go to the MLS.
This is a major state of intent from New York FC as they look to show their ambitions even before a ball is kicked. They seemed to have wrapped up both players and with such big names willing to play in New York, it won’t be very difficult to attract other players to their franchise. These are two Champions League winners, proven international stars and Villa a World Cup winner.
Villa’s coup is a huge surprise as Spain’s all time leading scorer is just 32 years old and he played a big role in Atletico Madrid’s league winning campaign and their run to the Champions League final. The Spaniard has at least 2 – 3 season at the top level left in his legs but it seems he plans to help with the development of the league much like David Beckham.
Lampard is 35 years old and is perhaps featuring in his final World Cup. The highly rated midfielder is Chlesea’s all time leading scorer. He has made a name for himself with his goals from midfield and his intelligence on the pitch since he has gotten past a certain age.
The movement of superstars was started by David Beckham in 2007. Beckham spent five years of his life promoting the league. He has soon been followed by Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Defoe, Tim Cahill, Thierry Henry and Torsten Frings.
