Giuseppe Marotta: Nani staying at Man United

Manchester United’s Portuguese winger Nani is set to stay at Manchester United after much speculation over his future this summer.

Nani is entering the final year of his contract but is set to sign a new deal to stay at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old winger had an injury-interrupted season last year and made very little impact on the Red Devils’ title-winning season. The Portuguese has shown flashes of what he is capable of but is largely inconsistent and has frustrated Manchester United fans. Despite his inconsistency, Sir Alex Ferguson has said he wanted Nani to stay at the club.

Reports earlier this week had suggested that Nani was moving to Turin to sign with Serie A champions Juventus. However, the director general at Juventus, Giuseppe Marotta, has stated that the Portuguese international will be staying put at Old Trafford.

Marotta was quoted on ESPN speaking to Mediaset Premium as saying: “He’s renewed his contract with Manchester United and we never negotiated for him.”

Nani was signed in the summer of 2007 from Sporting Lisbon for a reported £17m and has since won four Premier League titles, the Champions League and a Fifa Club World Cup. He was also voted the Player’s Player of the Year for the 2010/11 season, when he led the Red Devils to the Premier League title as well as the Champions League final at Wembley.
