The second round of the Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League got underway  on Wednesday and some interesting results have left both zones interestingly poised ahead of Saturday’s next set of matches.

In Zone A, Barbican destroyed Harbour View at ‘Compound’, thrashing them 5-0 as they ruthlessly march toward the semifinal round of the competition. The defending champions have found goal scoring relatively easy this season and last year’s leading goal scorer, Jodi-Ann McGregor hit a brace while this year’s current leading goal scorer Nikimia James, Shanique Smith and Davia Morrison were all on the score sheet in a one-sided affair.

It was James who got her name on the score sheet first in the 19th min before Smith made it 2-0 only 2 minutes later. Barbican are famous for scoring their goals in bunches and McGregor hit her brace in the 24th and 37th minutes as the half ended 4-0.

Morrison rounded out the scoring in the 57th minute as the expected tough challenge from Harbour View never materialised. Barbican have set a target of being ‘flawless’ again this season and as the season progresses it seems as though that may just happen once more.

The other Zone A game was between UWI WFC and Olympic at the UWI Bowl. UWI got off to a quick start as their leading goal scorer Sherona ‘Claro’ Forrester scored in the 5th minute with a neat finish to the far post from just inside the box.

The UWI fans would have been hoping for another goal glut similar to the 5-0 thrashing they had handed their opponents in the first round. That did not materialise however as indiscipline, especially in the midfield area from UWI prevented the free flowing football they have shown at times this season.

Despite the below first half performance Forrester doubled her team’s lead three minutes before the break when she collected a pass from influential midfielder Rochelle Bryan before blasting home, much to the delight of the home fans.

The second half display was even worse than the first as neither team was able to impose themselves on the other. Olympic Gardens did get a consolation goal in the 85th min when Kemicaya Carey finished from a corner.

The win lifted UWI to second in the zone and above rivals Harbour View on goal difference.

In Zone B, GC Foster College left it very late to secure all three points against Arnett Gardens. After a goalless first half,  Sharika Ingram broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 63rd min before Sadee Lewis leveled for Arnett Gardens to send the home team in raptures on minute 79.

But deep into stoppage time Kerall Whyte popped up to find the winner and break the hearts of the Arnett faithful.  The win means that GC Foster continues to lead the group courtesy of goal difference.

Trelawny Women’s FC kept up the pressure on the zone leaders as they too left it late to secure a 1-0 win over Frazsiers Whip. Nicola Brown got the winner for the visitors in the 80th minute.

Waterhouse who had a slow start to the season, has continued to maintain their form when they easily disposed of Los Perfectos 3-0. Tasheka Small got the opener in the first half before Shanice McDonald (67th) and Kenesha Reid in stoppage time completed the scoring for the home team.

Those Zone B results now leaves GC Foster, Trelawny and Waterhouse all on 11 points and separated by goal difference. Los Perfectos remain on 8 points and now occupy 4th position with Arnett one point behind in 5th. Frazsiers Whip continue to occupy last place and are still without a point.
