Athletic Bilbao reject Man United bid for Ander Herrera

Athletic Bilbao has confirmed that a €30m bid from English champions Manchester United for their midfield maestro Ander Herrera has been rejected. The bid for Herrera is reported to be short of his release clause and he will not be allowed to leave until that fee is met.

Athletic Bilbao has confirmed that a €30m bid from English champions Manchester United for their midfield maestro Ander Herrera has been rejected. The bid for Herrera is reported to be short of his release clause and he will not be allowed to leave until that fee is met.

Herrera moved to Athletic Bilbao in 2011 from Real Zaragoza and his release clause is reported to be €36m.

The Red Devils has failed to land their midfield targets so far this summer. Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Marouanne Fellaini were all targets but David Moyes has so far failed to land a big-name signing.

Athletic’s president, Josu Urrutia, has confirmed the bid but also said it was rejected.

“There is an offer for Ander Herrera,” he told reporters. “Our club is different. It is based on a feeling. Our objective is not to make money. We received an offer last night, but we already told them we do not negotiate for our players.”

He continued: “For a player to leave the player must show the desire to leave and deposit the release-clause money. For us, Athletic is a unique club. The players have to feel that.”

This is not a strange move by the president because it was the same procedure taken for players in the past such as Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente when they wanted to leave for Bayern Munich and Juventus, respectively.

Moyes now knows what to do if he wants to land his target. There is an indication the player wants a move to Old Trafford after his agent started to follow several Manchester United players on his Twitter account.
