Vere United held Waterhouse FC to a goalless draw on Sunday at the Stadium East Complex in the much-anticipated Jamaica Premier League.

It was a game that waited for something entertaining to happen but sadly for everyone it did not. Since the start of the season, Vere United have been stealing points from games that many predicted they would have been annihilated.

After spending much time in the relegation zone last season, the Clarendon-based club has been impressive defensively in their first three games this season.

As it stands, the man between the sticks for Vere United, Kadeem Davis has kept three clean sheets, the most in the league so far this season.

Meanwhile, the Drewsland Avenue outfit is seemingly playing below their usual standard. Even with 16 shots attempted, seven of which were on target\, Waterhouse could not break down a well-organized defense led by man-of-the-match and captain Ricardo Campbell.

Vere on the other side of things, could only manage to get two shots on goal with just one hitting the target.

Head coach of Vere United Donovan Duckie said that he was elated with the result, acknowledging that his men were playing against one of the top tier teams in the league.

“We are very pleased with a point. We knew that getting a point from this game would be a good achievement for us,” Duckie revealed.

With each game Vere United is shaping up to be a major cohesive squad that are neutralizing the fluidity of all the big teams’ offences and Waterhouse was just another successful assignment for Duckie’s men.

They remained tactically disciplined, sturdy and organized in defense and had their fair share of creating goal-scoring opportunities for themselves.

“We understand what is against us….those teams were playing in CONCACAF league and are more prepared than us and I thought we did exceptionally well,” he ended.

It was evident that with more than half of the ball possession (55%) Waterhouse had many advances at goal, and while not getting the desired result, assistant coach Damion Gordon thought his men played well, nonetheless.

“I am not disappointed with the performance of the team, but with the result. We did move the ball in changing the point of attack, but they defended well,” Gordon admitted.

Waterhouse will face five-time champions Tivoli Gardens in their next fixture and Vere United will take on Humble Lions FC.
