Experienced defender Andre Dyce gave Dunbeholden FC their first win of the truncated Jamaica Premier League at the Stadium East Complex on Sunday when he scored his first goal in the league in eight years.

From the start of the game, Dunbeholden FC seemed to be the team that wanted it more. The boys in their blue and red outfits started to attack very early and it paid dividends in the 5th minute of the game.

Off the end of a Nickoy Christian corner, Andre Dyce latched on to the ball and scored a back post side-footed effort for the opener and the only goal of the game.

Throughout the game, Christian controlled the tempo, marshalled the midfield well and was the key talisman behind all of Dunbeholden’s set pieces. In the end, for his brilliant display, he was named man of the match.

Assistant coach of Dunbeholden FC, Ricardo Smith was delighted with Nickoy Christian’s performance and lauded his leadership for the win.

“He took the team and was leading from the front, all the training sessions leading up to today. He was the leader from the warm-up to the game, he encouraged them, he did everything hence the performance today from him.”

However, Smith commended his players for sticking to the game plan and stepping up to the anticipated challenges expected.

“We know that we had to come here today and soak up a lot of pressure because this team [Cavalier FC] is a ball possession team. And they are youthful, they run a lot so we expected this from them. We talked about it we watched them before and we just gave it that strategy, we sit back and catch them on the counter.”

This win came at the new appointment of head coach Harold Thomas after losing their first two fixtures to Portmore United and Waterhouse FC, respectively.

Having won their first game, drew their second, Cavalier SC is suffering their first defeat of the season. Though still early days, Coach Rudolph Speid acknowledges that they did not play well and that it was a tough defeat.

“I can’t put my finger on any one thing, but I think the early goal kind a stunned us. We were not able to be our usual standards and then the conditions were really breezy, very difficult to control the ball.”

Cavalier lacked the creativity that the Jamaica Premier League is accustomed to seeing from them. Though a team made up of an aggregate of talented young players, Speid’s “young guns” were not able to fire themselves into the top of the table.

The Kingston-based team playing at home for the first time this season were missing their main danger in the appearance of Shaniel Thomas and coach Speid believed it hampered their way of playing.

“Not to make too many excuses, but we didn’t have Shaniel Thomas today, he was normally our point man. So, it made life for us a little bit different, we had to setup a little different to deal with his absence. It’s just a bad day for us and we just have to work harder and come again.”

Dunbeholden FC desperately needed the win which now takes them from the bottom of the table to eighth position on three points, while Cavalier SC drops one place down to fifth on four points.
