After struggling for the first half of the 2016-2017 Red Stripe Premier League season, Boys Town FC and Waterhouse FC will both be heading to the transfer market as soon as the window opens in order to strengthen their respective squads.
Both teams have struggled from the opening weeks of the season and are currently propping up the league after 17 games played of the 33 games regular season.
Boys Town are rock bottom on 12 points but snatched a point off defending champions Montego Bay United on the final match day of the year following a 1-1 draw at the Barbican Complex last Wednesday.
“It’s good that we closed the year without a loss. Come January when we resume, we hope to come with a lot more gusto and a lot more industry so that we can progress up the table,” said Boys Town head coach Andrew Price.
Neither team has been particularly impressive in front of goal, nor in defence. Waterhouse has scored 13 goals while conceding 18 and Boys Town has managed to score 15 while conceding a whopping 33, the most let in by any defence so far this term.
The only highlight so far for the Red Brigade has been the performance of teenaged striker Shamar Nicholson who leads the league in scoring with 9 goals.
“Defensively we are a lot more sound than we were at the start of the season and we are going to continue to build on that, we just need to be clinical in front of goal,” said Price.
“(I) wouldn’t want to say too much but there are players that we are gonna be bringing in,” said a coy Andrew Price when asked about additions to his squad.
Glendon ‘Adminral’ Bailey managed to secure his first win in his fourth attempt in charge when Waterhouse blanked Jamalco FC 2-0 at Drewsland.
“When you are coming in to a club and you are trying to bring your philosophy… it is not going to happen overnight. This is a good start going into the break, this will help them to be confident in me,” said Bailey.
When questioned about bringing in new players, Bailey was just as coy as Price.
“Yes, but I am not going to tell you,” he said with his trademark laugh.
“We have some people on the burner. We are going to make contact with the clubs so we can get them in. They are coming from other clubs so they will have some amount of condition, but we want them in early so they can understand our system of play.”
Both teams have nowhere to go but up and the managers have suggested that the players will be given a very short break during the festive period before training will resume in earnest.
