Eurotrend first to defend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price Six-A-Side title

Photo: Eurotrend celebrates winning back to back titles at the Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce six-a-side football competition on Sunday. Eurotrend retained the title by defeating first time finalists Ashoka Road 2-0.

 

 

 

 

Defending champion Eurotrend retained their title, and made history at the fourth staging of 2016 Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce six-a-side football in her native community of Waterhouse, being the first team to win the title twice, and also back-to-back, as they defeated first time finalist Ashoka 2-0, in the final on Sunday November 20, 2016.

Kevin Roman and Kamoy Simpson scored for the champion Eurotrend who also earned $200,000.00 in prize monies, with Ashoka earning $100,000.00. Andre Hickling scored for Miles in a 1-0 victory over Henley for third place, and $70,000.00, with the Henley earning $50,000.00 for fourth place. The competition started on October 1, with twenty (20) teams divided into five (5) zones, ending with a total of fifty-four (54) goals in the thirty-eight (38) matches played.

A jam packed venue of men, women and children at the Foska Oval, witnessed a wonderful final as Eurotrend, the overwhelming favouritres set about retaining their trophy.

Roman, who scored both goals in the 2-1 semifinal win over Miles United got the opener early in the first half, with a stunning drive that flew passed the Ashoka Road goalkeeper before he could react. Ashoka were under pressure for extended periods of the game but fought back late in the seond half as they hunted an equalizer.

Their hopes of getting back in the contest were dashed when the powerful Simpson rifled home very late in the game to seal the win for the defending champions, to the delight of their adoring fans.

 

Other winners were:  Leading Goal-scorer – Andre Hickling of Miles United with four (4) goals; Most Valuable Player – Kamoy Simpson of Eurotrend; Best Defender – Ralston Lennon of Ashoka, all three receiving a phone from Digicel; Dress Parade – Angola Strikers; Most Disciplined team – Miles. There were two special awards of a twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000.00) educational scholarship from sponsor Sanmerna Paper Products, to Gawayne Henry of Henley who attends Maths Unlimited, and Stephen Payne of Miles who attends St. Mary’s College.  

 

Sponsors and guest in attendance included Jermaine Brown of Wisynco, Robert White of Sanmerna, Marlon Walker of GraceKennedy, athletes Elaine Thompson, Nester Carter and Julian Forte, Bruce James of MVP, former reggae Boy Ian ‘Pepe’ Goodison, and MP Anthony Hylton.
