Kingston College and Jamaica College both advanced to the finals of the ISSA/FLOW Walker Cup finals after seeing off their respective semi-final opponents at the Constant Spring Field on Wednesday. KC had a narrow 1-0 win over a spirited Bridgeport High while it was a more straight forward win for Jamaica College who easily saw off Haile Selassie in the feature game.
The Kingston College v Bridgeport High game was continued from the 1-0 half time position where KC led on Tuesday after play had been suspended due to rain. While KC struggled to get back to their fluent passing game, Bridgeport who knew exactly what they needed to do to get back into the contest, took the game to their opponents but were unable to create any clear cut goal scoring opportunities.
They did create two goal scoring chances from free kicks near the box but failed to make use of them. For their part, KC should have gotten a goal or two on the counter attack but the offensive fluidity was lacking.
In the end, KC coach Ludlow Bernard was happy to have guided his team into the final. “
“I would term it as gutsy,” Bernard said of his team’s performance. “I really didn’t expect anything less than that here today. It was a rather unusual situation and we needed to be strong defensively. We were able not to even conceded a corner…and we didn’t concede a chance at goal which was very, very important for us.”
A Duhaney Williams brace ensured Jamaica College advanced against a Haile Selassie team that had upset favourites Excelsior High in the quarter finals. A bright opening by both teams eventually became one was traffic when the JC midfield seized control of the game through their captain Oquin Robinson and the lanky pair of Tevin Rochester and Chavany Willis.
Haile Selassie spent most of the time on the defensive and could do nothing about the opener from Williams who cut inside on his right foot from the left wing to curl a shot into the top corner over the head of the stunned Haile Selassie goalkeeper in the 14th minute.
JC held the lead to half time and Williams put the game to bed when he finished off a Donovan Dawkins right sided cross with aplomb with 30 minutes left in the contest.
Both teams will face off in the final next month but for now they will turn their focus to the Super Cup which begins on Friday and the Manning Cup which resumes next Monday with the quarter final round.
