A 21st minute strike from hitman Dino Williams was enough to earn defending champions Montego Bay United all three points at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex on Sunday. The defending champions edged Tivoli Gardens 1-0, to register their first points of the new Red Stripe Premier League season, while the home team suffered their first loss under new coach Omar Edwards.

The visitors, who lost at home on the opening day, were on the back foot from the opening whistle as Tivoli Gardens, who had had the largest win on the opening weekend (a 3-0 away win at Harbour View), threatened to run riot early on.

With the game just a few minutes old, striker Mitchily Waul had a glorious chance to put Tivoli ahead but his shot from about three yards out was blocked by a defender. Another chance fell to the former Boys Town player a few minutes later but his shot from near the penalty spot was brilliantly saved by David Swaby who dived to his right to effect the stop.

Tivoli continued to dominate the game with the pacey Nickoy Christian proving a real threat down the left side for them.

But Tivoli was stunned by a swift Mobay United counterattack, as the visitors took the lead almost out of nothing.

Allan Ottey, who had been quiet all game, blazed past three defenders down the left flank before crossing into the box for Dino Williams to poke home from close range. It was Mobay’s first shot on target.

The goal stunned the expectant home fans into silence but lifted the visitors, who had been sleepy at best, up to that point in the game.

Both teams battled fiercely in midfield and Waul, who was at the centre of everything good for Tivoli, had Swaby scrambling towards the far post after he headed a long free kick towards goal. The ball landed just wide of the post as the home team threatened yet again.

The second half was almost all one way traffic as Tivoli pressed for the equalizer. Mobay United played behind the ball, maintaining their shape as Captain Dwayne Ambusley marshalled his troops well.

Tivoli’s big defender, Kemar Seivwright, proved a real threat at set plays and a couple of headers from corner kicks went just wide of the frame on both occasions. The home fans remained on the edge of their seats as they tried to will in a goal for their team.

But the equalizer would not come, as new Mobay United coach Slavisa Bozicic oversaw his first win in the premier league.

Mobay United assistant coach Thelwel said, “We started slowly…but after fifteen minutes we came back into the game. We never had the best of games but we have three points so we have to be thankful.

“We have some new players that we are trying to fit in the team, so it is just a matter of time before we return to the level of play that we expect,” he explained

Both teams are on three points, but the win moves the champions up to 7th place while Tivoli slips from first to fifth after two match days.
