Kingston College got off to a winning start in their opening match of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup competition when they made light work of St. Mary’s College, defeating them 4-0 on their own grounds on Saturday.

Kingston College entered the match as favourites to come away with all three points and they did so easily, on a field that was not suitable for a football game, because of how much water settled on it.

KC start out maintaining possession of the football and looked dangerous down the wings as they maneuvered the soggy conditions. Ronaldo Robinson should have opened the scoring in the sixth minute, when he was left with space in the six yard box, but his right footed shot went over the cross bar.

Rashawn Mackison’s individual brilliance from 28 yards gave KC the lead in the 17th minute. The midfielder went past two St. Mary’s College defenders and fired powerfully to beat Yahshua Robinson in goal.

Mackison who wears the number 10 shirt, was once more running at the defenders and was brought down just inside the penalty box. The referee did not hesitate to point to the penalty spot in the 22nd minute. But the midfielder slid in the wet conditions just before taking the spot kick and his shot went straight to the goalkeeper who made an easy save, to deny KC and Mackison their second goal of the game.

St. Mary’s College tried to be disciplined in defense, but they were giving away possession too easily and not putting the purple and white clad team under any pressure. KC ended the first stanza leading 1-0 but could have easily have had two more goals, had it not been for the wet conditions.

Immediately after the break, Kingston College captain Javain Brown’s magnificent ball into the St. Mary’s College box was met by the right foot of striker Dashawn Donaldson who made it 2-0, just two minutes after the restart.

Kingston College was in total control of the game as their opponents just did not look organized and looked out of ideas for most part. Brown’s brilliant left side cross was perfect for Robinson, who showed great composure to score from close range and make it 3-0 in the 63rd minute.

St. Mary’s College did not register a shot on target, favouring to kick from distance, as they were not offered much space by the very disciplined KC defense.

Kingston College striker Raheim Irvin struck in the 78th minute to make it 4-0.

St. Mary’s College was down and out but they did continue to play and looked much better in the last 10 minutes of the game than they did in the first 80 minutes.

“It was a good performance from the lads, as they did not make the conditions hamper them and they really had possession of the football most of the time and used it very well. We could have scored more goals but such is the nature of the game. I wont be greedy as they have come here and taken the three points,” said coach, Ludlow Bernard.

Kingston College is heavily favoured to do well in the competition this year.
