The Jamaica Tallawahs got the better of Guyana Amazon Warriors for the first time in the last 5 meetings on Friday night at Sabina Park, as they began a four game home stand in the HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The Tallawahs restricted their opponents to 128-6 before cruising to 132-5 from 15.5 overs, despite being four wickets down with only two runs on the board and seven ball bowled.

The Tallawahs won the toss and elected to field and it seemed like the right decision as they bowled well to restrict the Warriors to only 128 runs in their turn at bat.

Imad Wasim was a top performer for the Tallawahs again with the ball, finishing with figures of 4 overs, 12 runs and 2 wickets.

Dale Steyn struck early for the Tallawahs, sending back the dangerous Martin Guptill, who edged a delivery to Kumar Sangakkara behind the stumps for a duck, with the last ball of the second over.

Chris Lynn came to the wicket and wasted no time to find the boundary, off both Steyn and Andre Russell. But, Wasim trapped Dwayne Smith leg before wicket (LBW) with his second ball of his first over, leaving the score at 36/2.

Wasim then removed the in form Chris Lynn (33 off 17 balls), who was looking to take the game away from the Tallawahs before he offered Russell catching practice at long on in the 9th over, to leave the score at 55/3.

Anthony Bramble was sent back for a measly 6 runs, holding out to Russell at deep mid wicket off the bowling off Shakib Al Hasan with the score at 86/4.

Rovman Powell brilliantly ran out Christopher Barnwell, who tried to take a tight single to leave the Warriors at 98/5 in the 17th over. Versammy Permaul was Steyn’s second victim, as he was bowled by the South African in the 18th over to leave the Warriors stuttering at 105/6.

Jason Mohammed (46 off 52 balls) played a good innings for the Warriors despite wickets falling quickly at the other end, as the visitors put on 20 runs in the final two overs.

Sohail Tanvir gave the Warriors the perfect start, removing Chadwick Walton, who edged behind to give wicket keeper Bramble an easy catch down the leg side. Andre McCarthy was run out a ball later by Dwayne Smith who was very alert to catch the lazy McCarthy short of his ground. Tanvir then had his second victim as Rovman Powell held out to Ali Khan at fine leg, to leave the side struggling at 2/3 at the end of the first over.

Sabina Park was left in almost total silence when Kumar Sangakkara offered Bramble catching practice off the bowling of Ali Khan to leave the Tallawahs walloping at 2/4 in the second over.

Andre Russell (24 off 15) and Shakib Al Hasan brought the Tallawahs back in the game with a 43 run partnership off just 23 balls before Russell went back to a brilliant catch at square leg by Zampa off the bowling of Versammy Permaul with the score at 45/5.

Al Hasan looked like the player we knew four years ago, playing some majestic shots despite wickets falling like ten pins at the other end. Al Hasan’s half century was well needed after the Tallawahs had dug themselves into a deep hole in the first 5 overs.

Chris Gayle (45 off 29) not out and Man-of-the-match Al Hasan (54 off 47) not out, then took the game away from the Warriors as they blasted their way to the total with more than four overs to spare. Gayle hit some towering sixes including one that landed on top of the George Headley Stand before slowing down as the target got closer, clearly struggling after aggravating his back while fielding during the Warriors innings at bat.

Tallawahs coach Paul Nixon was delighted with the win and especially the performance of his bowlers, but blasted his batsmen for being “careless” at the top of the order.

The Warriors remain in first place on 10 points while the Tallawahs move into second place on 7 points.

The Tallawahs next game will be today, when they will come against the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots stating at 6:00pm.
