The Jamaica Tallawahs won their second home game and fifth of the season on Saturday, after setting a challenging total of 183/6 before skittling out the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots for 75 to win by 108 runs in the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at Sabina Park. Led by a half century from man of the match Kumar Sangakarra and superb bowling figures of (4-1-19-3) from Kesrick Williams, the Tallawahs ensured they kept the pressure on the leaders Guyana Amazon Warriors, who are at the top of the table on 10 points just 1 point ahead of the Tallawahs but having played a match more.

The Patriots won the toss and invited the Tallawahs to take first knock, a decision which was vindicated when they struck in the 2nd over, Krishmar Santokie running out Chadwick Walton (8 off 9) who was looking dangerous, leaving the Tallawahs at 12/1. Sheldon Cottrell removed the explosive Chris Gayle for 1 in the fourth over after the captain top edged a delivery that spiraled up in the air and gave Devon Thomas an easy catch behind the wicket. This left the Tallawahs struggling at 20/2 with memories of a poor start the night before still fresh in the minds of the home fans.

The talented Rovman Powell (35 off 23 balls) joined the very experienced Kumar Sangakarra and the two put on a 74 runs partnership for the third wicket which helped set up the innings for the home team. Both had little difficulty to find the boundary, as they were both comfortable at the crease. The Patriots did not help their cause as they were very terrible in the field, dropping catches and miss fielding on a number of occasions.

Youthful exuberance got the better of Powell who was sent back to the pavilion by Tabraiz Shamsi, trying to hit a good length delivery for what would have been a second straight six, but the ball fell in the hands of Jonathan Carter on the long off boundary, leaving the score at 94/3.

The Patriots thought they had a fourth wicket in the 15th over with the score at 129/3, when Shamsi trapped Russell leg before wicket (LBW) but it was a front foot no ball and Russell was given a life.

Krishmar Santokie who had bowled well at the top of the innings, returned to remove the free flowing Kumar Sangakarra for 65 after he held out to Shamarh Brooks in the deep to leave the Tallawahs score at 139/4. Andre Russell edged Santokie’s next ball behind to give Thomas an easy catch and Santokie his second wicket of the game to leave the Tallawahs stuttering at 139/5.

But Shakib Al Hasan, who was man-of-the-match the night before, took the Tallawahs to 183/6 with a quickfire 34 runs off 17 balls.. Krishmar Santokie was the Patriots best bowler, finishing with figures of (4-24-3).

Andre Russell gave the Tallawahs the perfect start with the ball, removing Lendl Simmons in the first over for a duck, by the caught and bowl route with the Patriots yet to score.

Faf Du Plessis was sent back to the pavilion after trying to hit a maximum but held out to Chadwick Walton off the bowling of Andre Russell to leave the Patriots struggling at 12/2.

Kesrick Williams then turned the game on it’s head when he got three wicket in the 9th over. First he sent back Jonathan Carter (23 off 20) holding out to Rovman Powell at long off, before Evin Lewis was on his way back to the dressing room two balls later, also holding out, this time to Andre McCarthy at mid-wicket. Brad Hodge went back immediately after taking his guard, edging a ball to Chadwick Walton at second slip, as the Patriots were reduced to 53/5.

The Patriots lost four wicket for no runs when Garey Mathurin got in on the action, removing the in form Devon Thomas for a duck, with the Patriots sinking fast at 53/6. It was just a matter of time before the Tallawahs could celebrate victory.

The last four Patriots wickets fell for just 22 runs, with the Tallawahs bowling unit being disciplined once again while being supported by an impressive fielding display.

The Paul Nixon coached Tallwahs will look to make it three from three at home on Monday when they host the Trinbago Knight Riders starting at 8:00pm.
