The battle for the final spot in the top four of the Red Stripe Premier League continues today with the Cinderella team, the University of the West Indies FC, clinging desperately to the coveted final, semi-final spot while being hotly pursued by Humble Lion FC.

As if winning their last two games to ensure a top four spot isn’t enough, the Mona based UWI team needs to overcome league leaders Portmore United FC today at the Juici Park field in Clarendon. But it will not be something that the visitors find too daunting, having won their first ever premier league game, away to these same opponents earlier this season.

For Portmore the equation is very simple, collect four points from the last two games and they finish top of the RSPL and claim the $1M prize. But the challenge isn’t a simple one as they face the defending champions in their final league game. They must therefore be at their best to continue their own fairytale story, having returned to the league this season, following relegation at the end of the 2013-2014 season.

Humble Lion FC hosts a desperate Cavalier SC, with back to back wins boosting the confidence of the Vassell Reynolds coached unit. The ‘lion’ has roared at the right time in pursuit of a semi-final spot and Cavalier may just be another victim as the Clarendon based team looks to balance out the numbers in the final four.

Cavalier needs points to guarantee premier league football next season and with just two points coming from the last five games, will need to find something special today to guarantee safety.

Harbour View FC still has a mathematical chance of qualifying for the semi-finals and must approach today’s game against the champions Arnett Gardens as though it were a final itself. Having seen chance after chance of securing that top four spot slip from their grasp, the Ludlow Bernard coached team will be hard pressed to get the better of Jerome Waite’s boys.

Arnett have no doubt had the discussions about what is required to finish at the top of the standings and that would include a win today before facing the current league leaders on Sunday. This means both teams should be fired up, despite their being just two game days left in the regular season.

Harbour View must win their final two games and hope that UWI and Humble Lion lose both, while Arnett Gardens will be hoping that Portmore United lose both their games as well, in order to finish top of the pile.

The only game of academic interest on today’s match card is between Boys Town and Tivoli Gardens at the Barbican Field. Boys Town’s top four hopes fizzled when they conceded late against Humble Lion to lose 1-0 on Sunday while Tivoli guaranteed their premier league status with a 1-0 win over Rivoli United.

All games begin at 3:30pm.
