Captain Horace Burrell, President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) made a stunning but honest revelation about the problems that the world governing body of football FIFA, has been enduring over recent months.
Addressing the audience at the opening of the second Academic Conference on International Football and the Business of Football at the University of the West Indies on Wednesday, Burrell said, “The amount of money in the organization, (huge bucks) caused the problems in FIFA.”
However, while conceding that the organization was flawed, Burrell expressed confidence in the reform process now on at the Swiss based organization.
“Reforms are taking place and documents have been tabled and accepted by the congress so brighter days are ahead for football in terms of integrity,” he assured the audience that included the likes of football coach Geoffery Maxwell.
Burrell praised the organizers of the conference for looking at football at an academic level while admitting that he was pleased with the performance of the UWI team in the Red Stripe Premier League.
“The UWI team should not be beating the defending champions Arnett Gardens but they are doing that, which proves that intelligence is important in football,” he noted.
UWI stands a very good chance of making it to the semi-final round of the RSPL, in just their first season at this level. With only three rounds of matches left to be played in the regular season, they sit in fourth place on 42 points, one more than fifth place Humble Lion.
