The shot shy strikers from both Boys Town FC and Waterhouse FC failed to find the back of the net on Sunday when the two teams met at the Barbican field in the latest round of the Red Stripe Premier League.
They both created enough chances to win the game with the visitors Waterhouse guilty of missing some simple chances as they did themselves no favours in their quest to climb off the bottom of the tables.
A new look Waterhouse team, captained by the returning Hughan Gray in defence and with the old experienced head of Kevin Lamey up front and Weston Forrest in midfield, were in desperate need of all three points and could have opened the scoring in the second minute of play when Lamey provided the perfect layoff for winger Deandre Brown who shot straight at Mikhail Harrison from 12 yards with the entire goal to aim at.
Boys Town striker, Shamar Nicholson, tried his luck from the edge of the area just three minutes later but he was leaning back and stretching and failed to make proper contact with the ball. It was an easy save for Akeem Chambers in the Waterhouse goal.
Waterhouse dominated the opening period without creating many chances but the home team thought they had taken the lead in the 15th minute when Peter Keys steered the ball home from close range, following a brilliant pass from Adrian King, only to be denied by the flag of the assistant referee.
Another chance fell to the lively Keys shortly after, when Garfield Gillespie released Michael Campbell down the right side and with time available to him, the Red Brigade captain picked out his teammate at the near post but Keys was unable to steer the ball home on this occasion.
The game then became a battle of wills in the midfield but lacked action upfront, until the last 10 minutes of the half. A long ball from Brown was intended for Lamey but it was half cleared by the Boys Town defence straight to Kenroy Howell, who failed to hit the target from 14 yards.
Nicholson had another look in shortly before the break but Chambers left his line early enough to snuff out the danger.
At the other end, Howell had Harrison scrambling to push a shot around the post as it threatened to sneak in at the far stick.
Both teams had one more chance before the interval, Keys watching as his shot from the edge of the area sailed over the crossbar before Brown spurned yet another opportunity when teed up by Lamey even better than the second minute of the match.
Campbell was the first to miss in the second half, when he anticipated well to run onto a ball after a mix up in the Waterhouse defence, but he inexplicably missed from four yards out.
Waterhouse house was down to 10 men in the 56th minute when Rohan Amos was shown a second yellow card by referee Veralton Nembhard, having picked up his first caution in the first half of the game.
Keys then had a chance to hit the back of the net after he caught the Waterhouse defence all at sea but his lobbed effort went wide of the target.
With just over 15 minutes left to play, Waterhouse came closest to breaking the deadlock when Howell met a cross of Kemar Beckford at the near post but his shot slipped through the hands of Harrison then crashed off the crossbar and back into play.
That was a close as it got for either team as they both had to settle for a point despite needing all three for different reasons.
Paul Young credited his team for a gutsy performance playing away from home.
“It was a very gutsy performance. Going down to 10 players hampered us a little bit but we played very courageous. We fought hard..we would have wanted the three points but playing away from home I think it’s a good performance by my team.”
Andrew Price described his team’s performance as a passionate and energetic one.
“I thought we played with a little bit of passion and a lot of energy. We came here not to lose this game, I think we played hard. With a little bit more luck we should have really taken the lead especially in the second half. We got some gilt edged opportunities that we should have really put away..if the forwards had put away those chances we would have had a comfortable victory.”
The draws leaves Waterhouse stuck at the foot of the table on 16 points with two games remaining in the second round. Boys Town on the other hand is in 6th position on 26 points, tied with 7th place UWI who beat Reno 3-1 and 5th place Harbour View who plays Portmore United tonight.
