Surprise package Jonathan Grant defeat Charlie Smith

Jonathan Grant (JG) defeated Charlie Smith 2-0 to take pole position in Group K of the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup competition on Monday at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.

In a game that had so much meaning to both team, it was not shocking to see the intensity with which they both started, going for it in front of a jam packed stands which consisted mostly of Jonathan Grant supporters.

There were some chances for both teams that were not taken for the first half an hour in the game.However, the goal did come in the 32nd minute when Jonathan Grant striker Anelka Grandison just guided the ball past the advancing Eric Robinson in goal.

Charlie Smith did come close to leveling the score but some brilliant goal keeping from Christopher Wisdom denied Ronaldo McDonald from distance.

Johnathan Grant went to the break with the one goal advantage which was a well deserved one.

Zamario Sinclair got Charlie Smith’s best scoring opportunity of the game, in the second half, when he received a cross from Jevaughn Knight but failed to make enough contact to put the ball in the back of the net from four yards.

Jonathan Grant went up 2-0 in the 61st minute when Tyrone Small was all by himself at the back post and had a simple tap in finish.

It became worst or Charlie Smith in the 78th minute when captain Shaquille Notice was shown a red card for violent conduct after he hit Damion Raye in his face.

The game was controlled by Johnathan Grant to the whistle and the players and supporters celebrated knowing that they are very close to advancing to the semifinals.

The Spanish Town base institution only need a single point against Calabar next week in order to ensure they make it to the semifinals.
