Two top local netball stars head to England

The upcoming season of the English Netball Superleague will be injected with some Jamaican presence.Sunshine Girls Shanice Beckford and Nicole Dixon will display their skills in Vitality Netball Super League for franchise Team Northumbria, out of the Northumbria University. Both players were apart of the Jamaican squad at the recent Netball World Cup held in Australia earlier this year.

Both players caught the eyes of scouts from the Northumbria University, from as early as June, and were followed by them all the way to the netball championship.

Beckford and Dixon who plied their trades in the semi professional league locally, as well for the Universities of Technology and Micro College respectively, will be afforded the chance to continue their tertiary studies at the Northumbria institution in areas of sports and business.

The form Queens school standout ,Beckford and rural area kingpins, Holmwood Tech dynamo Dixon will join the Tyneside based University for preseason training later this month.

Beckford who plays in the Goal Attack position for the national team and the wing attack and centre court player, Dixon, will both join the likes of Romelda Aiken, Carla Williams-Borrego and Jhanielle Fowler Reid who have played in international leagues.

The past and current national shooters have done excellently in their stints in the Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) league.

The outgoing Netball Jamaica president Marva Bernard has extended her blessings and expectation of an outstanding showing in their new endeavors.

“Their association with TN will see them exposed to high level international netball on a weekly basis. And this will undoubtedly add immense value to them both as individual players and to the Netball Jamaica senior programme” she expressed to the Skyports media.

The 21 year old Dixon made her International Debut on June 1. 2014, was naturally elated with her new challenge.

“All I can say is that hard work does pay off and whatever anyone wants to be in life or achieve in life it can be done with hard work and determination.
It was – and still is – a wow moment for me, knowing I’ve done so well in my career that Northumbria is my next destination” she told Skysports media.
