Holmwood Technical of Jamaica made light work of the much vaunted Scarborough Secondary of Trinidad and Tobago on day four of the AFNA Champion of Champions High School Netball Tournament beating them 44-19 to take sole leadership of Pool ‘A’ on Wednesday.

Having had a day to rest, a refreshed Holmwood Technical jumped on their opponents at the start of the game surging to a nine goal lead before Scarborough found a response. The first quarter ended 14-2 as the shell shocked visiting team struggled to cope with the high lobbed passes into the shooting circle for Alliah Lue and Shadine Bartley who were in the mood to score.

Three quick goals at the start of the second quarter by the Scarborough team seemed to indicate that a match was on, but that notion was quickly squashed by Holmwood. They went on the offensive again to take control of the game once more and established a thirteen goal lead at 23-10 at half time.

The Carline Graham-Powell coached team then doubled the output of the T&T outfit, 10-5 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 33-15 with one quarter left to play. There was no let-up from Holmwood in the fourth quarter as they scored 11 goals while Scarborough got only 4 as the Christiana-based school registered a massive 25 goals win for their third success on the trot.

In the other game played at the same time, Springer Memorial of Barbados had a wire to wire win over Soufriere Secondary of St. Lucia. Springer established a five goal first quarter lead at 11-6 and extended it to seven at half time with a 19-12 score line.

It was a 10 goal lead at the end of the third quarter with the scores reading 31-21. Springer then pushed it even further in the final quarter to win by 14 goals at 43-29.

In the day’s early game, Dominica State College (DSC) failed to register a win in the preliminary round of the tournament when they went down to their fourth consecutive defeat. Christ Church Foundation was in no saintly mood as they inflicted a trouncing on their opponents with a 44-16 win.

The overcast conditions made it a little easier for the players but the strong afternoon winds still posed a challenge. Christ Church doubled their opponents output in the first quarter 10-5 before tripling it in the second quarter 15-5 for a 25-10 half time lead.

A low scoring third quarter saw Christ Church getting 8 goals while DSC got just 3. It never got better offensively for DSC in the final quarter as they scored three more while Christ Church scored eleven for their second win of the tournament.

Ingrid Folkes was pleased with the overall performance of her players although she wanted a little bit more out of them.

“It was a good performance, I still would have preferred it a little better because I wanted 50 goals but I will take the 44 because it was a good performance. It gave me a chance to move around players and look at my weaknesses and my strengths,” she said.

Christ Church will battle with Scarborough this afternoon to determine who will advance to the semifinals with Holmwood Technical from Pool A and Folkes is ready for the challenge.

“Every game is an important game for my team. As I play my games and my team dismiss them, it’s one down. So that’s how I approach my game. We will take on Scarborough when that time comes. I believe games are played on the court and not on paper,” said a determined Folkes.
