Camperdown High School and St. Georges College took the advantage on day one of the St. Georges College Invitational Football competition on Saturday, scoring comprehensive wins over Godfrey Stewart High and Paul Bogle High respectively, the two other schools in the competition.
In the one sided opening encounter, a slick passing, confident Camperdown team took control of the match from the opening whistle. They pinned back their opponents and were quickest to the ball on almost every occasion. The goals flowed freely, as the well oiled machine, coached by Christopher Bender, showed their experience of being together for the last three years.
A half time lead of 5-0 was more than doubled by the final whistle as Camperdown ran out 11-0 winners against a new and fairly young Godfrey Stewart team.
Bender was pretty pleased with his team’s performance but had a few areas of concern.
“The scoreline is quite pleasing especially due to the nature of the competition. We would have loved to have gotten a few more goals but as the game wore on the boys lost their concentration.
“We still want to improve in speed of thought so we can move the ball faster in our transition game and get into the final third quicker, which will result in more goals,” he concluded.
In the day’s second game Paul Bogle put up a much better fight against St. Georges College and actually took the game to the hosts. They created a few half chances early but were shown how to score by STGC when their captain Shevon Stewart and vice captain Gregory Messam Jr. combined neatly to cut open their opponents defence, before Stewart slotted home.
The visitors continued to put up a fight but still found themselves trailing 2-0 at half time after they conceded a second goal shortly after the first.
The exciting Alex Marshall was introduced at the start of the second half to the delight of his ‘fan club’. His tricky dribbling skills had him ghosting past the defenders at will as the small gathering of spectators cheered him on. The loudest cheer was saved for his sublime goal which rounded off another exquisite performance by himself and his team as they cruised to a 4-0 win.
STGC assistant coach Marcel Gayle, was pleased with his team’s showing.
“It is still very early but we are happy with what we saw from the boys today. Tomorrow we will take a look at some other players as we continue to asses our squad.”
Paul Bogle coach Mr. Williams rued the early missed chances by his team.
“We created a few early chances and could have taken the lead but failed to make use of our chances. We gifted them two soft goals and that pretty much cost us the game. I told them before the start of the match that you cannot give teams of this quality any chances and that is exactly what we did.
“We only started ball work last week, so all in all I am not too unhappy with the overall performance of the team and this is a good test for us.”
The tournament which is sponsored by Ensure will conclude today with Camperdown facing Paul Bogle at 2:00pm before St. Georges take on Godfrey Stewart at 4:00pm
