Another Chris Gayle T-20 century, his first in front of his home crowd at Sabina Park, led the Jamaica Tallawahs to their second win in two days in the HERO CPL. The Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel were the second team to be put to the sword by the Jamaicans at home this season. The Tallawahs posted 180 for 6 from their 20 overs before restricting the Red Steel to just 150/9.
Gayle scored 105 off 58 deliveries hitting 9 sixes and 6 fours to set up Jamaica Tallawahs 50-run victory. With half their home fixtures complete, the Tallawahs are now second in the table, level on points with Barbados Tridents and will be aiming to go top before the home stand is complete on Sunday.
Gayle’s first scoring shot was a six off the fourth ball of the innings bowled by Jacque Kallis and then he got 2 more in the next over off Johan Botha. Chadwick Walton who was the main man in their partnership just two days ago, had to stand and watch as the “World Boss” put the Red Steel bowlers to the sword. The pair put on 70 before Samuel Badree had Walton trapped LBW for 13 runs.
The Tallawahs looked on course to get 200 runs before they were pegged back by Sulieman Benn who bowled 3 overs, for 19 runs taking, 2 wickets. First he had the wicket of Chris Lynn, caught behind by Kamran Akmal and a couple runs later he had Mahela Jayawardene caught behind by Akmal again. The dangerous Gayle was still at the crease and he got support from Jermaine Blackwood as the pair put on a 68 run partnership off 42 balls.
Dwayne Bravo had the wicket of Gayle in the 19th over, who finish with a strike rate of 184.21. The Tallawahs had to settle for 180 in the end losing six wickets in the process.
“It was actually a good wicket to bat on, as you could see the ball was coming through and getting 180 on this pitch was really satisfying,” said the man of the match, Gayle.
Jackque Kallis got 10 runs off the first over, which Krishmar Santokie bowled, but after that the Red Steel saw three of their top order going back without scoring. Daniel Vettori had the wicket of opener Cameron Delport caught by Santokiefor a duck, Darren Bravo was caught behind by Chadwick Walton of the bowling of Krishmar Santokie for a duck, Kamran Akmal was out LBW off the bowling of Jerome Taylor for just a couple and the Red Steel was really out of it when Dwayne Bravo was sent back, after trying to hit a Andre Russell delivery that found the hands of Chris Gayle for a duck. At this stage the Red Steel were 28/4 after 4.3 overs.
Mark Deyal and Kallis tried to rebuild the innings but by this the Tallawahs bowling unit was so confident that every bowler got into the action and had a wicket or two.
Jacque Kallis top scored with 46 off 36 deliveries, hitting half dozen fours and a single six. Samuel Badree was the next best, getting an unbeaten 29 runs off 16 balls, hitting a six off the last over that was bowled by Chris Gayle to give his team a respectable total.
” Obviously our plan was to try an get Chris Gayle out early but that never happened. Samuel Badree gave us the breakthrough and the experience of Sulieman Benn held it up in the middle for us , but with Chris (Gayle) batting for most of the overs you expect to have a lot to chase and when we lost early wickets, the game was done there,” Dwayne Bravo said.
The Tallawahs bowlers were too hot to handle as Krishmar Santokie finished with 3 for 27, Daniel Vettori 2 for 22 and Jerome Taylor 2 for 2 picked up wickets at regular intervals, to ensure the Red Steel could not create any damage with the bat.
