The Jamaica Tallawahs thumped the St. Lucia Zouks, winning by nine wicket with four overs to spare at Sabina Park on Tuesday night as they began their four game home stand in the HERO CPL 2015.
Led by the opening pair of Chadwick Walton and captain Chris Gayle, who both scored half centuries, the former champions safely rattled off the 159 for the loss of only one wicket after the Darren Sammy led Zouks who could only manage 158/5 in their 20 overs.
Chadwick Walton who had not contributed much with the bat before this match was right on the money from ball one, flicking the first ball of the innings for a four. Walton who was the man of the match for his knock of 76 from 48 balls which included 3 sixes, really put on a show at Sabina Park while Chris Gayle watched from the other end, early in the innings.
Runs came easy for the Tallawahs and the Zouks made it that much easier with dropped catches and misfields. Darren Sammy ran from cover to catch a ball Chris Gayle hit straight up in the air, but floored it with the score on 78/0.
It got worse for the Zouks as both Gayle and Walton put on a show before Walton tried to hit Fidel Edwards over mid-on, but found the hands of Kemar Roach to the end 119 run partnership. The Tallawahs at this stage needed forty runs off 25 balls.
It was time for the Chris Gayle show, as Chris Lynn was just a spectator at the none striker end. Gayle was particularly harsh on former West Indies pace bowler Fidel Edwards hammering him for 18 runs off 10 balls Darren Sammy put down an easy catch off Chris Lynn near the end as Gayle ended on 64 not out and Lynn 8 not out.
” In the team meeting we spoke about that, everyone should try to bat deep and not leave it up to anyone person, Krishmar Santokie gave us a brillant start with the ball and Chadwick Walton really bat well tonight (yesterday)”Gayle said.
Earlier medium-pacer Krishmar Santokie gave theTallawahs a good start removing both of the Zouks openers cheaply inside three overs. Kevin Pietersen who started slow and was dropped by Chadwick Walton on 42 made the Tallawahs pay with an unbeaten 83 off 58 balls.
Pietersen and Darren Sammy added 70 runs for the fifth wicket, that came to an end when Sammy retired hurt on 29 in the final over because of an injured finger and was not able to bowl. Daniel Vettori really held it together for the Tallawahs with four mean overs that saw only 13 runs coming off them.
” We lacked concentration, an it was really difficult losing 3 wickets in the first six (6) overs, the pitch was not a bad one to bat on as Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton showed” Darren Sammy said.
