Registration for the highly anticipated million-dollar LIME National Street Futsal Championship begins on Friday, January 30, and continues into the month of February. During the competition that is set to begin March, more than 250 teams from 15 parishes (Portmore will be treated as a parish) will do battle over 10 weeks to determine who will National Futsal Champions and win more than a million dollars in cash.
The telecommunications company that had successfully staged a street football tournament in 2014 will take a different approach to the competition this year as it intends to have a greater impact on the development of local football. Futsal programmes across the world focus not only on increasing and honing football skills, but fusing opportunities for continued sports education, training, and steering individuals away from unemployment.
LIME’s Vice President of Marketing Carlo Redwood said his company is excited about getting things started for the 2015 National Futsal Competition. “We are eager to get started on the first stage of what promises to be a ground breaking and exciting initiative that will undoubtedly unearth new football talent and contribute towards the development of football in Jamaica,” he said.
For this year’s tournament will be comprised of four outfield players and a goal keeper in the competition that will feature bigger goals. Teams will also be playing with a smaller ball that has less bounce than a conventional football.
LIME has also announced several venues where teams can register for the competition. All that is required is that teams buy $1000 credit and submit proof of purchase with their respective applications.
Starting January 30, teams in St Thomas will begin registering at Marville Pharmacy and Service Centre on Wharf Road in Morant Bay. In St. Mary teams should register at the LIME store on Stennett Street in Port Maria while in Portland, Fone Frenzy on Harbour Street, Port Antonio, will start taking entries.
Come February 6, teams in Trelawny, St. Ann and Clarendon will begin registering at Core Communications on Lower Parade Street in Falmouth; Island Plaza in Ocho Rios, and LIME May Pen at the Bargain Centre on Main Street, May Pen respectively.
On February 13, it will be the turn of teams from the parishes of Manchester, Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth to register at Super J Cellular Services, Willowgate Plaza in Mandeville; LIME Savanna-la-Mar, Beckford Plaza on Beckford Street; and Super J Cellular in Santa Plaza, Santa Cruz, respectively.
Come February 20, teams from Portmore, St. James and Hanover will begin registering at LIME Portmore at the Portmore Mall; Fone Frenzy at the Bay West Shopping Centre and JC’s Communication at Seaview Pharmacy in Lucea respectively.
On February 27, LIME Spanish Town in the Sagicor Plaza; Record Plaza in Tropical Plaza on Constant Spring Road, and Royal Jewellers at 81b King Street, will be taking entries for teams in St. Catherine, St. Andrew and Kingston respectively.
From the teams registered 15 teams will be randomly selected from each parish. There will be three parish draws each week. Each draw will be filmed at posted on LIME’s Facebook page 24 hours after the draw. The 15 randomly selected teams plus last year’s parish champion from the LIME Street Football Competition will battle for the parish title. Each parish champion will win $100,000 cash.
Each parish champion plus a wild card team selected from the best second-placed teams will then play-off for the million-dollar cash prize.
Games will be played on Saturdays and Sundays until a winner is decided.
