Arnett Gardens FC shot back into the top four of the Red Stripe Premier League at the expense of former champions Harbour View FC when defeated them 2-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Sunday. The win came courtesy of second half strikes from Andrew Phang and Vishinul Harris.
A cagey but engaging first half produced few goal scoring opportunities between two evenly matched teams. The best chances of the half came very early when a brilliant diagonal pass from Harris picked out Leon Strickland deep on the left flank and the forward cut inside his marker before firing a shot to the near post, which was well saved by Levor Williams in the Harbour View goal.
Moments later, Arnett Gardens were counting their blessings after a quick counter attack from Harbour View saw Donovan Edwards deliver a pin point cross to MckaullyTulloch whose one time left footed effort, on the volley, crashed against the crossbar and back into play.
Both teams fought for control of the game but cancelled each other out, especially in midfield, as they went in scoreless at the break.
Arnett seized the initiative in the game after only eleven minutes into the second half when Phang scored from the spot after a Damion McNeish foul in the penalty area.
The visitors were forced to go on the attack which opened them up to the quick counterattacking style of Arnett Gardens. Both teams created a few more openings with Ranique Muir stinging the palms of Peter Harrison in the 65th minute.
Ten minutes from time, the game was made safe for the home team when Harris capitalized on the failure of Harbour View to clear their lines and he slotted home from close range to seal a 2-0 win. It was the second win for Arnett over Harbour View this season, having beaten them 1-0 in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season.
Jerome Waite credited his team’s victory to the work put in over the past few days.
“The team played well in all areas today, especially in defence and this is because of the work we put in over the last few days. I thought Dasha Satchwell had a very good game in central midfield, protecting the back four and this made the game comfortable for us,” he said.
Andrew Hines admitted his team was second best on the day, “It was a hard game, both teams played well but things didn’t happen for us today. We have a few players out on injury but hopefully we will get them back soon to strengthen the team.”
The win moved Arnett back into fourth spot on 20 points, one place and one point above Harbour View in what continues to be a close and competitive league.
