Photo: Romario Campbell scored a stunner for Waterhouse in the second minute of stoppage time to help guide his team to a 2-0 win over Cavalier SC on Monday night.
Waterhouse FC stretched their lead atop of the Red Stripe Premier League to six points when they blanked former league leaders Cavalier SC 2-0 at the Stadium East field in the latest edition of Red Stripe Football Monday. Goals in the 5th minute by Tremaine Stewart and in the second minute of added time by Romario “Rom Rom” Campbell, was enough to secure all three points for the Drewsland based club.
The visitors got off to a flying start when they were put ahead by Stewart before most of the spectators had taken their seat. The goal settled the Waterhouse team and as they have done in quite a few games this season, the midfield took control of the game.
Playing like the home team and not the away team, Waterhouse upped the tempo and created a few half chances with the always dangerous Jermaine “Tuffy” Anderson and speedy Juvaune Benjamin being at the centre of the attacks.
As the half wore on it became more of a physical contest with quite a few tackles flying in from both teams.
Neither team was able to carve out any clear openings for the rest of the half as Waterhouse maintained their slender lead at the break.
A more purposeful Cavalier team fought their way back into the contest in the second half, finally putting the Waterhouse defence under some pressure. The Drewsland based team who welcomed back the likes of Hughan Gray and Nicholy Finlayson from international duty back into the backline stood firm however, providing good protection for goalkeeper Kelso Cousins.
The game became even more physical in the second half with the stretcher being called on for players from both teams on a few occasions.
Cavalier provided a few anxious moments for Waterhouse towards the end of the game but the contest was over in the second minute of added time when another player back from international duty, Romario Campbell, curled a sweet left footed strike around a defender and inside the far post to secure all three points for the Anthony Patrick coached team.
Patrick was happy to be 6 points ahead of the pack with one round of games left to go after the fixture is completed on Wednesday.
“We are definitely not where we want to be in terms of how we were playing in midfield during the CONCACAF Champions League, but we are getting there,” he said.
“Things are working out, we fought hard for the win and this shows that we have the mental toughness to grind out results when we are not playing pretty. I am happy with the position we are in at the moment and we just need to maintain it,” Patrick concluded.
The remaining fixtures in the round will be played on Wednesday, with another former champion Harbour View looking to cut the gap back to three points when they travel to the Effortville Community Centre to take on second from bottom Humble Lion at 5:00pm.
Other games on this Wednesday are, Barbican FC v Tivoli FC at the Barbican Field, Montego Bay United v Arnett Gardens at Wespow Park, Sporting Central FC v Reno FC at Juici Park and Rivoli FC v Boys Town FC at the Prison Oval.
