Promoted Bull Bay FC took advantage of a complacent August Town team to register a narrow 2-1 win in the second game of a double header, on the opening day of the JN/KSAFA Super League and Major League at the Barbican Field on Sunday. In the opening game Marvely/Hughenden edged Duhaney Park 1-0 to get their season off to a decent start.

In the feature game, Bull Bay started their Super League campaign on the front foot, taking the game their more celebrated opponents, August Town who had been relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season. The Bull Bay midfield looked sharper than that of August Town and talented Bull Bay forward Donovan McCurdy, was giving his markers a lot to think about.

The Paul Hibbert coached team was rewarded for their industry when they took the lead in the 19th minute. McCurdy received a pass with his back to goal and skilfully turned Keno Levy in the box. The defender grabbed at the shirt of McCurdy leaving the referee with no other decision than to award a penalty and issue a yellow card. Captain Bevill Grossett stepped up to calmly slot home to the left of Devon Haughton and give the underdogs Bull Bay, the lead.

Bull Bay continued to show that they belonged as they matched their opponents for the rest of the half and deservedly went in with the 1-0 lead at the break.

Two minutes into the second half August Town was reduced to 10 men when Carlton Passley was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

Despite being down a man, the former premier league campaigners took control of the game, with Fabian Cooke bossing the midfield and driving his team forward. Despite their territorial advantage, August Town failed to create many goal scoring opportunities and found themselves 2-0 down with 20 minutes left to play when McCurdy scored a peach of a goal from about 24 yards. The forward’s thunderous right foot shot sailed into the top of the net leaving Haungton no chance.

When Nicholas Smith slipped the ball between the legs of Akeem Smith in the Bull Bay goal to reduce the deficit in the 77th minute, it gave August Town a glimmer of hope, but it was not enough as Bull Bay ended the game 2-1 winners.

Hibbert was pleased with the opening win and praised the effort of his young players.

“It was a very good game, a very entertaining game. It is always good to begin the season with a win. I thought we did very well and I am pleased with the team. Obviously there is still a lot to be done as the season goes on but we can only get better from here,” he said.

August Town coach Michael McIntosh was less than happy with his team’s performance.

“It’s a total disappointment,” he exclaimed. “We will have to look into ourselves. This result shows that the Super League is not a pushover so we cannot afford to be complacent.

“We lost a player early in the second half, but even then we were in total control of the game but failed to create the goal scoring chances. We should have gotten at least a point from this game so it is really disappointing to leave here with nothing,” said a clearly disappointed McIntosh.

In the opening game between Marverly/Hughenden and Duhaney Park, a 45th minute strike from Travis Muir was enough to earn the Bradley Stewart coached team all three points in the first game of the Major League.

The league continues this weekend with a full slate of games in both competitions.
