Defending champions Hydel Prep was made to work hard in their 2-1 win over Wolmer’s Prep as action continued in the quarter-final round of the Tastee/JISA Alberga Cup at the UWI Bowl on Monday.

Hydel seized control of the game from almost the opening whistle and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 9th minute when young prodigy Damoy Whitehorn dribbled pass three defenders with absolute ease before slotting into the far corner past a hapless Mathew Grant in the Wolmer’s goal.

Whitehorn then spurned two more chances to add to the lead even before fifteen minutes had been played in the game. First he shot wide of the post from just inside the area before firing another effort just over the crossbar as Wolmer’s rode their luck.

Wolmer’s was being put to the sword by the attacking quartet of Whitehorn, Donte Thorpe, Rueben Brown and Destyn Bradshaw with the lanky Bradshaw bombarding the Wolmer’s defence with his long throw-ins.

Ten minutes before half time Bradshaw made it 2-0 to Hydel when he was quickest to a rebound from a free kick which tucked home past Grant.

Hydel began the second half the way they ended the first, taking the game to Wolmer’s as they went on the hunt for more goals. Whitehorn almost grabbed a second but lost his balance just as he was about to shoot and skewed his effort well wide.

The maroon and gold clad team slowly worked their way into the game and started putting Hydel under pressure. Suddenly it was the team from Ferry that had to be defending long throws as Wolmer’s seized control of the game. With ten minutes left on the clock Wolmer’s were denied a stone cold penalty as the referee waved away their loud and extended appeals.

Wolmer’s finally got a consolation goal in the dying moments when substitute Matthew Baker fired home a beautiful free kick from distance, into the roof of the net.

Hydel were made to sweat through two minutes of stoppage time before they could claim three vital points in their quest for a place in the semi-finals.

Hydel was scoring their second win in the round and now need only a draw against Vaz Prep in their final group game to advance to the semi-finals.
