The fourth staging of the Sagicor/UWI Guild Champions League got under way last Friday with the three times defending champions Attica (Block D – Taylor Hall) facing Cluster 8 (The Revolutionaries) of Rex Nettleford Hall in the first game of a double-header.

The underdogs from Rex had a fast start against the champions and surprised everyone when they took the lead through Tariq Rochford. They continued attacking Attica and were rewarded for their enterprise when Wade Brown put them 2-0 up.

The Revolutionaries started defending deep and the champions hit back when Dennis Nicholson cut the deficit to 2-1 before half time.

With the momentum firmly in their favour Attica came out running at the start of the second half and was soon level when Ramone Reid scrambled home from close range.

Sensing that their opponents were vulnerable, Attica kept pressing and the Revolutionaries found it difficult to get out of their half.

With time running down and penalty kicks looming, Nicholson found the winner and his second of the game when he refused to give up on a ball and managed to turn a defender in the box before firing home to make it 3-2.

Wild celebrations followed the goal as the champions advanced to the second round of the competition for the fourth consecutive time.
