Last year’s losing finalists in the UWI Guild/Sagicor Champions League, Roosters (Block – C, Taylor Hall) scored a dramatic penalty shootout win over Block X of Chancellor Hall in the second game of a double header, on the opening day of the 2014 season, last Friday.

Last year’s Cinderella team, who became fan favourites after making it all the way to the finals in their first season, the Roosters, were made to work hard by a determined Block X.

The Chancellorites started confidently and dominated their opponents for long periods of the game. Despite their territorial dominance Block X was unable to make the advantage count as the half ended 0-0.

Clearly not overawed by the Taylorites the Chancellorites began the second half the way they ended the first and not surprisingly took the lead when Jordan Trout put them ahead.

Shook up by going behind, the Roosters rang the changes and took the game to their opponents. The game appeared to be won by Block X but there would be a sting in the tail when the Chancellorites conceded an own goal with virtually the last kick of the game. A defender turned the ball past his goalkeeper when trying to clear a right sided cross.

With no extra time in this competition the game went straight to penalty kicks. The Roosters goalkeeper Daraine Morgan was the star of the show in the shootout, as he saved three penalties to help his team win 2-1 and advance to the next round.
