Los Perfectos FC leapfrogged former group leaders GC Foster College into first place in Group B of the Sherwin Williams Women’s Football League on Wednesday.

With GC Foster inactive, the Mandeville based team took full advantage to go top of the group when they inflicted a heavy defeat on newcomers St. James Women’s Football Academy at Jarrett Park. Led by a Roheema Bennett brace, Los Perfectos cruised to an easy 5-1 win as the league’s leading goal scorer found the back of the net either side of the half time whistle. Bennett leads the goal scoring charts with 6 goals from 3 games so far this season.

Other goal scorers for the winners were, Remona Hyde, Shenika Williams and Chevelle Lopez who wrapped up her team’s scoring in the 88th minute. Kadian Grant, who now has four goals this season, got the consolation goal for the home team.

Over at the UWI Bowl, the University Women’s Football team stunned former champions Harbour View 3-1. In an eventful first 45 minutes, the home team did enough to secure all three points and with it their second win of the season.

The UWI got off to a flier when former national under-17 invitee, Brenda-Lee Walsh, put them ahead from close range, with barely two minutes on the clock. Harbour View hit back shortly after when their leading scorer Shavell Martin (four goals), drew them level just three minutes after the opener. The goals kept coming and UWI were ahead again through an own goal in the 17th minute.

Walsh made the game comfortable for UWI three minutes before half time when she got her second and UWI’s third as the Marvin Gayle coached team registered their second home win this season.

The other game in the zone was the battle of the cellar dwellers. New comers Boys Town Wildcats hosted Real Morant Strikers at Collie Smith Drive with both teams seeking their first points of the season. After an engaging first half that appeared to be heading for a stalemate at the break, Nerissa Williams stunned the home crowd when she squeezed the ball in at the near post to give Real Morant a 1-0 lead in first half stoppage time.

The visitors doubled their lead when Latoya Dixon outpaced the Wildcats defence to slot home nine minutes after the break. But the home team refused to go away and pulled one back just three minutes later. Taunashae Hamilton, who is keen on returning to the national under-17 set-up, scored direct from a free kick just three minutes after her team went 2-0 down.

With the score line reading 2-1, the momentum swung from the visitors to the home team as the Dwayne Richards coached ladies grabbed the initiative. The home supporters cheered on the Wildcats who were in search of the equalizer, but Real Morant put in a brave rearguard effort to keep them at bay.

Just when it seemed that the St. Thomas based outfit had done enough to secure all three points, Theara Annake popped up to head home from close range and grab a point for her team, after a free kick from Hamilton fell kindly for her in the 86th minute.

Both teams now have one point but the Wildcats are still rooted to the foot of the table having a goal difference of -15.

Los Perfectos leads the group on goal difference, tied on 9 points with second placed GC Foster College. The UWI are in third place with six points while Harbour View on four points, are in fourth place leading fifth placed St. James Academy on goal difference. Real Morant Strikers and Boys Town Wildcats complete the tables.
