Jamaica’s women’s football is set to improve as twenty six coaches including National Under 15 coach, Xavier Gilbert and Senior’s Women’s assistant coach Tamara Williams take part in a week long coaching course at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Technical Training Centre at the University of the West Indies.

The programme will be conducted by FIFA instructor and current Fitness and Performance coach for the USA Women’s football team, Mrs. Dawn Scott.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Monday, newly re-elected JFF President, Captain Horace Burrell spoke of the growth of women’s football internationally and of the new significance it has taken on in the region.
“In Jamaica we must continue to play the lead role for the development of football in the region and women’s football is no different. I urge the participants to learn as much as they can and then take it back to the girls throughout the country so that our football can truly benefit,” Burrell said.

The President of CONCACAF Mr. Jeffery Webb also gave remarks at the ceremony and he spoke of the need for this kind of training for coaches in the region.

“The game is changing everyday and education has become important in the preparation of teams.

“We have never qualified a team to the FIFA Women’s World Cup from the region and in recent times we have not qualified a men’s team either. We have to raise the standards of football and it starts with you, you have to teach and inspire…capture their imaginations and inspire the girls,” he told the participants.
“I challenge you to be the first to qualify a team to the Women’s World Cup.”

Dawn Scott who worked with the English Women’s team for nine years before taking on the US assignment in 2010 said she was excited to be in the island to teach the course.

“Performance development continues to move on in an always evolving game. The goal is to create a learning environment and push you beyond your comfort zone,” she told the participants.

“I am hoping for an exciting, fun week and a learning week, where I learn from you and you learn from me.”

Six of the coaches participating in the course are women.
