News has broken that Liverpool has agreed a deal to sign 32 year old striker Rickie Lambert from Southampton. The striker has been named on Roy Hodgson’s squad for this summer’s World Cup but the deal is expected to be completed before the World Cup.

The striker has been in good form since the Saints returned to the Premier League in 2012 and has scored two goals from four appearance for England. The deal is said to be worth 4M plus add-ons and Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers is happy to bring back the Merseyside-born striker who left Anfield as a teenager after he failed to make the grade in their academy.

He said, ‘I think Rickie is a terrific player. People look back now and say it was a mistake to let him go but there may have been something that was a factor.’

‘Rickie may not have been interested in football at the time or there may have been something else in his life. He just might not have been ready for what Liverpool was about at that time but there is absolutely no doubt within development that it cannot just be about what the player is now.’

Lambert could be the first of many signings this summer for the Reds. Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren also of Southampton have been strongly linked with a move to Anfield. The 32 year old however is expected to be an alternative to the first choice striking duo of Luis Suares and Daniel Sturridge.
