Manchester United owner dies at the age of 85 years

The owner of Manchester United, one of the biggest football clubs in the world, died at the age of 85 years. Malcolm Glazer who led the controversial take-over of the Manchester club in 2005 was reported to have passed away yesterday.

The news was broken via the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers website. The statement read, ‘The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are saddened to announce the passing of Owner/President Malcolm Glazer earlier this morning at the age of 85.’

The American businessman who led the take-over of the Red Devils was able to see great success since he became the owner lifting five Premier League titles and of course the Champions League back in 2008. Under his ownership Man United participated in three Champions League Final in four years (2008, 2009 and 2011), thus making it arguably United’s most successful period.

It hasn’t been all rosy for Glazer as his take-over came with a lot of debt which was met by anger from the United fans. There were many instances where the fans showed their discontentment in public because they feared that they American was acquiring the club purely for financial gain. Moreover, the revenue and profit generated by the club was used to finance the Glazer Family’s debt much to the dismay of the Old Trafford faithful.

In the wake of his death, the club expressed it condolences to the family. A brief statement was issued on the club’s website expressing their grief in such a difficult and crucial time for the club.

The statement read, ‘The thoughts of everyone at Manchester United are with the Glazer family tonight following the news that Malcolm Glazer has passed away. Malcolm leaves behind his wife Linda, six children and 14 grandchildren. Staff at Manchester United extend deep and sincere condolences to them all at this difficult time.’
