Former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Luis Enrique has resigned from his post as manager of Celta Vigo. The 44 yea old manager has been tipped to take over at Barcelona this summer from current manager Gerardo Martino, who may still deliver the La Liga title with victory of Atletico Madrid this summer.

Enrique had several meetings with Barcelona officials at his home regarding taking over the reigns at the Camp Nou. Since the departure of Tito Vilanova, Luis Enrique was the name that was strongly linked to lead the team into the future. In his statement today, he made it clear that it has been tough leaving his family back home in Barcelona but was careful not to give any indication of what he will do next.

He was quoted on Goal saying: ‘Today is a sad day.Today I am coach of Celta and I will be until the end of the season. I felt obliged to let the club know my plans, so they have time to prepare. There is no exclusive reason [for my departure], but I left my family behind in Barcelona and that has been hard.’

He continued: ‘I can’t confirm or deny anything. In terms of my future, there is nothing to talk about. If an interesting situation arises in future, I will communicate that.’

The 44 year old played 8 seasons at the Camp Nou from 1996 – 2004 before managing Barcelona B for three years. He then took over at AS Roma in the Italian Serie A in the summer of 2011 where he spent just one season. Enrique then took over at Celta last summer and has them in eight position in the La Liga table. It is expected that he will be named the new manager of Barcelona in the coming weeks.
