Red Stripe Premier League leaders Waterhouse FC and defending champions Harbour View FC both secured contrasting wins to inch away from third placed Montego Bay United who have now lost back to back away games as action continued in the league on Sunday. Fourth placed Arnett Gardens also won on the day to close the gap between themselves and Mobay United to just three points.

Harbour View played the early game on Sunday and made sure to secure all three points away at Juici Patties Park. After a goalless first half against hosts Sporting Central FC, the Stars of the East got the game winner with less than a quarter of the game to play through in form striker Nicholas Beckett, who scored directly from a free kick. The 73rd minute strike was enough to return them to the top of the league for a few hours as they climbed to 51 points.

Rivoli United were promoted to the top flight at the start of the season and are fighting for their premier league lives. The St. Catherine based team showed they are up for the fight by edging former league leaders Mobay United 1-0. Davian Garrison’s 12th minute strike was enough to settle the contest and propel his team from second-bottom to 7th place. Rivoli now has 35 points, one less than Cavalier SC.

Cavalier who played away to fourth placed Arnett Gardens FC, began the day hoping to close the gap on their opponents with a win and keep the slim hopes of a playoff spot alive. Renae Lloyd put the home team ahead in the 37th minute, a position they held until the interval.

Cavalier’s hope of getting something out of the game faded when Liscon James was red carded in the 60th minute and their troubles were further compounded when Arnett doubled their lead through Marcelino Blackburn just 9 minutes later. Girvon Brown raised the hope of the visitors when he pulled a goal back in the 74th minute but that is all they would get out of the game as they remained in 6th position with four rounds left to play.

August Town have been rooted to the foot of the table for a long time, but they managed to keep their faint hopes of survival alive when the blanked Humble Lion 2-0 at the Effortville Community Centre. Tyrone Davis got the visitors off to a quick start when he scored in the 13th minute before Lenox Creary sealed the win three minutes from time. Despite their woeful position in the league, August Town has owned Humble Lion, beating them on all three occasions that they have met this season.

League leaders Waterhouse showed their resilience once more, when they registered a come from behind 3-1 win over Tivoli Gardens at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium, all but ending the visitors’ chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Tivoli started the game on the front foot, playing like a team on a mission but spurned a number of chances to take the lead before finally doing so through a 32nd minute Navion Boyd penalty. The goal seemed to wake up the hosts and Waterhouse finally got into the game towards the closing stages of the first half. Despite their best efforts the home team were unable to find a reply as Tivoli went into the break with the 1-0 advantage.

Anthony Patrick’s half time team talk appeared to work as 10 minutes after the break Waterhouse captain, Damarley Samuels pulled his team level when he fired home from an acute angle following a corner kick. Samuels has been having a miserable time in front of goal recently and would be relieved to have hit the back of the net.

Kenroy Howell has been on a hot streak for his club recently and got the go-ahead in the 74th minute when he cut inside a defender inside the box before setting himself and firing past Edsel Scott at the near post. Waterhouse was reduced to ten men in the 83rd min when midfielder Vincent Earle was red carded for pushing an opponent.

Second half substitute Juvaune Benjamin, made the game safe in the 90th minute when he stole a ball of Ranike Anderson and passed to Howell and kept moving. Howell then slipped the ball into the path of his strike partner who side-footed it into the corner of the net from just inside the area.

In Monday night football, Portmore United and Boys Town played out a 1-1 draw at the Ferdie Neita Park. A dull first half, hampered largely by a poor playing surface, gave way to a more exciting second half as both teams sought to climb out of the relegation zone.

Ricardo Morris put Portmore ahead with a 57th minute screamer that gave goal keeper Kirk Porter no chance. But Boys Town fought back and drew level when Rafiek Thomas popped up at the near post to head home a corner and give his team a share of the points.

The result meant that Portmore climbed above Humble Lion into 10th position while Boys Town moved further away from trouble and into 8th position.

The wins for Waterhouse and Harbour View means that both teams have qualified for the semi-finals.
