The inaugural Berger Netball League will start this Friday at the Leila Robinson Courts in Kingston.  The opening ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 pm while the centre pass for the first of three matches is at 6:30 pm on court one.

The six-team competition replaces the Berger Super League.  It will feature the top seventy-two players in the island who were selected by lottery on earlier this month.  The teams are Kingston Humming Birds, St. James Sharpes, Manchester Spurs, St. Catherine Racers, St. Ann Orchids and Clarendon Gaters.

The featured match will see the Sylvester ‘Chris’ Campbell coached Kingston Humming Birds with Elaine Davis and Thristina Harwood taking on St. James Sharpes which is coached by Jennifer ‘Shaggy’ Brown with Shameera Sterling, Paula Thompson and Sahser Gaye Henry.

The second set of matches which will be played concurrently at the same venue will see Manchester Spurs battling St. Catherine Racers while St. Ann Orchids will face Clarendon Gaters.

The Spurs is coached by Karlene Graham and boasts players such as Shantal Slater and Vangelee Williams while the Racers is coached by Christopher Smart with players including Sabrina Spence, Malysha Kelly and Khadijah Williams.

The third and final match between the Valerie Blake Orchids will see Sasha-Gay Lynch, Shanice Beckfor and Kimone Tulloch on court against C Lloyd Walker’s Gaters with Kasey Evering, Nadine Bryan, Nicole Aiken-Pinnock and Simone Gordon.

According to the fixtures some of the matches will be played in Clarendon and St. James while the final rounds will be played inside the National Arena in Kingston.

The word from the coaches is that the competition will be competitive across the teams as, through the lottery system of selecting the players, the available talent has been shared fairly among the teams.  They have been in keen preparation for the start on Friday.

The netball community eagerly awaits the new competition format which will see former team mates playing against each other.

The colours for the teams are Manchester Spurs – grey and red, Kingston Humming Birds – pink and white, St. James Sharpes – burgundy and yellow, Clarendon Gaters – red and blue, St. Catherine Racers – blue and dark blue and St. Ann Orchids – purple and yellow.
