Holy Family wrote their name in the history books when they became the first school to win the Samsung Cup, a competition staged by the Electronics giants, Samsung for boys aged 8-12 years.

The final, which was played at the Stadium East field was held between Holy Family Primary, the champions of Kingston and Irwin Primary, the champions of St. James.

A highly entertaining final, which was dominated by the Kingston champions, failed to produce any goals during regulation time which consisted of two 15 minutes periods.

The winners were decided by a penalty shootout and the Holy Family players were able to hold their nerve when it mattered most. Holy family kicked first and after both schools missed their first attempt, the next three kickers from Holy Family scored with just one from Irwin finding the back of the net.

Winning coach Raphelita Banner, the only female coach in the competition was very pleased that her school was the first to etch their name on the beautiful trophy.

“It is a really good feeling to be the first to win the trophy. It is overwhelming. Regardless of who wins after this, we will always be the first to do so. This victory is dedicated to our principal who retired on Friday after 31 years at the school. The boys said they were going to win it for her and they did just that. I am very proud of them. They worked had to get here and I think we deserved the win today.”

Andre Neil, coach of Irwin thanked the sponsors for the opportunity they provided for the boys, “First I would like to thank Samsung for giving the boys a chance to showcase their talent,” he said

“Penalties have a psychological effect on players and these are just young boys. The Holy Family players concentrated better than us and they were able to get the job done today. But both teams produced good football and there were no goals which shows the closeness of the teams.

“The experience was too much for my boys, a lot of them became ill on the way up. They were not able to handle the drive. Most of them have never been to Kingston before so maybe next time we can meet half way for the finals instead of having to travel all this way,” he lamented.

Quest Prep took third spot when they defeated Corinaldi Primary. Errol White, coach of Quest Prep  was happy for the final day victory, after a resounding 4-1 win.

“It was a good victory for us. The boys said before the game that they wanted to win it to finish the season on a high and on a winning note. The game today was good performance from them.”

Quest captain Jhadi Williams, who scored a screamer for his teams, got 2 goals in the game.
