The curtains came down recently on the inaugural Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce/Waterhouse six-a-side football competition and before the line could be drawn under the first staging the sponsors of the competition were clamoring for a second staging.

The final which drew a large crowd from the community was an exciting affair. Both teams displayed uncanny tactical ability in a scrimmage competition, with the eventual winners Varma Rangers coming from behind to clip Dark Side 2-1, courtesy of a brace from Leslie Johnson.

Speaking with Yardie Sports after the presentation ceremony, Fraser-Pryce explained the reasons behind the first staging, “The need for unity and camaraderie within the community is what fueled the competition.

“It wasn’t difficult to get sponsors on board and after that my organizing team took care of everything else. They sorted out the entries, they sorted out the gears for the respective teams and they knew how to get in contact with the players who would actually play in the competition.”

Obviously enjoyed by entire community, when quizzed about the feedback from participants and spectators alike, the World and Olympic 100m champion said, “It has been tremendous, it has been fantastic for every match day. The people are happy to come out and watch and enjoy it as a family, which is what it was designed to do. So from that standpoint I am very happy.”

As to the final itself, the little dynamo was quite pleased, “It was really intense and really good. Both teams wanted it, both teams showed their skills but in the end the better team won.”

Not surprisingly, the fastest woman in the world has already start planning for next year and she explained the things she would like to see happen. “I am looking forward to making it an annual event. We want to make it bigger and better next year. Hopefully we can have more teams participating.

“I am appealing to the sponsors to help with fixing the field and maybe putting in some stands. Also the park at the entrance of the community, just next door to the field, needs some work, so we need some help with that as well.”

Karen Rosen, the Trade Marketing Manager for Wata, who was elated at the show put on during the finals has already committed the full support of her company for next year, likewise Benjamin Simms of Digicel insisted that his company would be there in full support again next year.
