Mona Prep made light work of Wolmer’s Prep recently to advance to the semifinals of the JISA Alberga Cup, scoring a convincing 3-0 win, courtesy of a Duncan McKenzie hattrick at the UWI Bowl.
In a totally dominant display, Mona controlled the game from start to finish with Matthew Bell and Duncan McKenzie having things all their own way from the first whistle to the last.
It was Bell who threatened to open the scoring, first with a free kick that went narrowly wide, before dribbling past two players with the utmost of ease down the right flank before firing just over the top.
Wolmer’s were warned but were helpless to respond to the ruthless attack of the Mona team.
Wolmers goalkeeper, Daniel Ashley was soon called into action, when a smooth Mona build up, saw a Dante Jackson pass to Jared McDonald result in a fine shot on target that brought out the best in Ashley who produced a brilliant save to keep the scores at 0-0.
Mona would not be denied however and Duncan got his first of the afternoon when he unleashed a shot from the top of the box which rocketed into the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 half time lead.
Less than five minutes after the break it was 2-0 when McKenzie produced a calm finish from just inside the area this time. The spectators had barely settled down to watch the game again when the diminutive midfielder doubled the lead.
The second half was a replica of the first as Mona pushed for goals to ensure smooth passage to the semis.
Midway the second half, Bell came close to getting on the score sheet, when his long range effort hit the upright and went out of play.
Duncan completed his hattrick and the game’s scoring shortly after when he showed his class, dribbling by a defender before composing himself to fire into the far corner. He had missed a similar effort just moments before and that goal showed how quickly he had learned from his earlier effort.
The referee ended the misery for Wolmer’s shortly after, as Mona cruised into the semifinals, led by their maestro McKenzie.
