As the final set of games were played in the quarter finals of the JISA Alberga Cup, Hydel Prep and Vaz Prep squared off for top spot in the group and a guaranteed place in the semifinals.

Hydel who led the zone on goal difference going into the game saw their advantage wiped away within three minutes of the first whistle.

The big two for Vaz Prep, Zidane Barnes and Jhavier Lynch combined to give their team the lead when Lynch was on hand at the far post, to head home a perfectly executed free kick from Barnes, giving Vaz the early momentum.

Matthew Rose almost doubled the lead for Vaz when his good dribble down the right flank was capped off with a shot that ended up on the side netting while some spectators celebrated, thinking that it had gone into the goal.

Another Barnes free kick caused trouble for Hydel when their keeper was unable to hold onto the ball which had to be scrambled clear by the defence.

Hydel started working their way into the game after that as Dunshane Bernard and Andru-Lee Cassanova started to make their presence felt.

The Vaz Prep defenders were on the backfoot now and a brilliant cross from Cassanova was scrambled clear by Scott McLeod in the nick of time.

It became a battle in midfield between Barnes of Vaz and Bernard of Hydel as the half drew to a close with Vaz clinging to their one goal advantage.

Hydel started the second half on the front foot, taking the game to their opponents as they sought the equalizer.

Their dominance of the game was duly rewarded midway the half when second half substitute and the smallest player on the park, Dante Thorpe, hit a sweet volley out of the middle of his instep, which flew past Jalen Young in the Vaz Prep goal before he could react.

Stung into action, the Vaz Prep forwards sought to restore their team’s advantage and quick turn and shot from Taje Chamberlain almost had the desired effect.

It became huge tussle after that as both teams hunted the winner.

Lynch was almost on the end of another Barnes free kick for Vaz and then it was the chance for Damoy Whitehorn of Hydel to show off his good dribbling skills as he drove his team forward.

A last ditch tackle from Scott four minutes from time kept the scores level and then Vaz made a last push to get the winner.

Hydel would have the last real chances of the game when back to back free kicks from Bernard went narrowly wide and then straight to Young in goal.

The 1-1 score at the final whistle was a fair result as both teams qualified for the semifinals based on the results of games elsewhere.
